Gulf Cooperation Council

One wonders why US President Donald J Trump has of late ordered a  pause in  the US strikes on Iran’s power plants. Tehran does not seem to have any consideration at all for his ultimatum to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The freedom of navigation through the Strait is crucial for trade and commerce for the entire world today. Washington is supposed to lead the modern free world. It should have stuck to its original efforts aimed at reopening the Strait to ensure free trade in the region.

One would suggest Jerusalem to be extra vigilant and war-prepared in the current situation. Israel would do well   not to be overdependent on the unprecedented military cooperation the USA has of late extended to it. Jerusalem needs to dismantle, as early as possible, the radical Iranian regime that has posed an existential threat to the whole world since the fall of the Shah government in Iran in 1979. Time is running out fast for Jerusalem.

Tehran has reportedly already enriched its uranium to near-weapons-grade levels. If Tehran is allowed to proceed with its weapon program, it is sure to become a nuclear weapon state in due course and pose a much greater threat to the Jewish State and the world. The successive dispensations in Iran since 1979 have already made declarations to annihilate the Jewish State and impose their version of Islamic rule the world over.

Pertinently, Israel could imagine it might be naïve to take any US military support for granted. No doubt, the US has long designated Israel a major non- NATO ally. It has made Israel the largest cumulative recipient of its foreign aid. The US has also used its UN Security Council veto power status to foil any move hereat to condemn Israel. Besides, the United States has recognized the Golan Heights   as a non-occupied Israeli territory. It has recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But all this scenario does not look very stable in future.

Reports are that domestic opinion on the current US-Israel military cooperation is being increasingly divided in the United States today. Like the current heads in Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Canada, some populist voices in the USA are said to be peddling the view that it is not in the interest of the USA to have any joint operation with Israel against Iran .Given the importance of populism in the contemporary operational democratic politics the world over, the ruling elites in Washington tomorrow might choose to  give in to such voices and not remain militarily aligned with Israel.

One would also suggest that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states could join the Israeli enterprise to dismantle the radical Iranian regime . They must bear in mind Iran’s imperial ambition has been intact in its post-1979 landscape. The current government in Iran is a confirmed follower of the Shah regime as far as its territorial ambitions in the region are concerned.  Today the Iranian regime’s brutal missile and drone attacks are targeting not only Israel but its Gulf neighbors too.
