Kamala Harris has now served as Vice President of the United States for over three and a half years, yet the American public remains in the dark about why the ambitious policies she frequently champions have not been implemented. Despite having ample time in the second-highest office in the nation, the crises facing the country seem to have intensified under her watch, leading many to question her leadership and intentions.
This concern came to the forefront recently during a vice presidential debate when Ohio Senator JD Vance pointed out that Kamala Harris’ much-touted “day one” arrived nearly 1,400 days ago. Yet, Americans are still waiting for her promised solutions to many of the most pressing challenges facing the middle class. The question remains: if Harris truly has innovative plans to help struggling Americans, why hasn’t she acted on them in the past three and a half years?
From the moment she entered office, Harris has had access to resources, influence, and executive power that few politicians can even dream of. As Vice President, she occupies a position that could enable her to spearhead meaningful change in a host of policy areas, from immigration reform to public safety. But instead of pushing forward actionable solutions, she has continued to campaign on promises rather than accomplishments.
As Vance aptly observed, Harris is not merely an observer in the Biden administration. As Vice President, she has played a significant role in shaping the policies of the administration. If she truly believed in the necessity of these reforms, the logical course of action would have been to push for them within her existing role. Instead, the nation has seen a deterioration in key areas, including national security, the economy, and domestic policy.
One of the most striking criticisms of the Biden-Harris administration is that their tenure has been characterized more by rhetoric than by results. During her campaign for vice president, Harris laid out an extensive list of priorities, ranging from climate change and immigration to economic relief for struggling Americans. And yet, these issues have only worsened. Border crossings remain at record highs, inflation has diminished the purchasing power of millions of families, and energy independence has been compromised.
Harris’ continued promises of future action become harder to take seriously as these problems intensify. As Sen. Vance put it during the debate, “If Kamala Harris has such great plans for how to address middle-class problems, then she ought to do them now, not when asking for a promotion, but in the job the American people gave her three and a half years ago.”
Nowhere is the failure of the Biden-Harris administration more evident than at the southern border, where Harris was tasked with leading the charge on border policy. With the vice president in a key leadership role, illegal crossings have surged, human trafficking has become a growing problem, and drug smuggling has intensified-leading to a sharp rise in fentanyl deaths across the country. Despite holding the title of “border czar,” Harris has remained notably absent from meaningful efforts to stem the crisis, leaving many to wonder why she has failed to act decisively on an issue she claims to care about.
Instead of tackling this problem head-on, Harris has continued to deflect blame or make vague promises about addressing “root causes” in countries like Guatemala and Honduras, while neglecting the chaos at the border. The end result? The situation has worsened dramatically since she took office.
Beyond the border, the economic conditions for middle-class Americans have become a central point of concern. Under Harris’ watch, homeownership has become an unattainable dream for many, grocery prices continue to climb, and inflation has outpaced wage growth. Rather than addressing these problems with tangible solutions, Harris has once again relied on future promises and campaign speeches that fail to reflect the reality of her tenure as vice president.
Public safety is another area where Harris’ policies have fallen short. Violent crime in many major cities is rising, with law enforcement resources stretched thin. Harris, once a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, has struggled to balance those ideals with the growing need for public safety. Instead of putting forward pragmatic solutions that support both reform and protection, the situation remains gridlocked, and the average American is left to deal with the consequences.
What becomes abundantly clear from Harris’ track record is a failure of leadership. Holding the office of vice president is not merely about symbolic gestures or preparing for a potential presidency-it is about actively addressing the challenges facing the nation in the here and now. Yet, instead of stepping up to that challenge, Harris has largely coasted, offering little in the way of substantive solutions.
Leadership is about accountability, yet Harris appears to be banking on voters forgetting her role in the current administration’s failings. As Sen. Vance pointed out, she has been in office for nearly 1,400 days. It is disingenuous to suggest that the problems that have escalated during this period can only be addressed by electing her to a higher office, when she has done little to resolve them from her current position of power.
As the 2024 election draws near, the contrast between the Biden-Harris administration and their challengers becomes even starker. While Harris continues to make vague promises of future action, her political rivals are keen to remind voters of the accomplishments achieved under former President Donald Trump’s administration. From stronger national defense to greater energy independence, Trump’s team is emphasizing its record of action-a stark contrast to Harris’ track record of inaction.
As Vance noted in his debate comments, “Donald Trump’s economic plan is not just a plan, but it’s also a record.” This reality may very well resonate with voters who are tired of being told what will happen, and instead want to see results.
At the end of the day, voters will have to decide whether to trust Kamala Harris with the future of the country. But her failure to act on the policies she claims to support raises serious questions about her leadership. If she has such great plans for the future, why hasn’t she implemented them already? After nearly four years in the vice presidency, Americans have seen little evidence that Harris is up to the challenge. For many, that reality may be enough to deny her a chance at another “day one”.
