Why Surda Mines is closed for three years

Surda Mines is closed since April, 2020 due to non-renewal of lease extension. 1500 laborers became unemployed. The state government extended the lease in December, 2021

Global tender contract company MMPL got to restart Surda Mines. The contracting company started the work of commissioning the mines on 15 April 2022.

On June 24, 2022, in the presence of MP Vidyut Varan Mahto, MLA Ramdas Soren, DFO Mamta Priyadarshi and Mining Director of HCL, the operation of the ore laden Hiva was started.

Surda Mines did not get mining challan due to difference in lease area and environment clearance

Due to non-transportation of ore produced from Surda Mines, the contract company stopped production in Surda Mines from January.

Surda Mines was leased by the state government for 388 hectares, while environmental clearance was given for 323 hectares. Surda has 65 hectares of forest land. HCL again applied for environment clearance. The matter is pending between the state and the central government.

In the absence of mining challan, about 50 thousand tonnes of ore is being wasted in the Surda mines complex.

Surda Phase-II is closed from April 1, 2020. There is a dispute going on between the contracting company Shriram EPC and HCL.
