On being honored with the prestigious Dronacharya Award, veteran field hockey player and renowned coach Sarpal Singh said that he is proud to be a part of India’s glorious hockey history. Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs and Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur on Wednesday conferred the prestigious Dronacharya Award on veteran Sarpal Singh.
Founder Director of Roundglass Sports, Sarpal Singh has represented Punjab and India in various hockey tournaments in his career. Also dedicated himself to mentoring sportspersons and identifying and nurturing talent including international hockey players and Olympians from India. He has also coached Northern Railway teams that have won the Nehru Gold Cup, Bombay Gold Cup and Gwalior Gold Cup trophies.
During his tenure as the coach of the Northern Railway Hockey team, Sarpal Singh produced some of the best hockey players in India. Pirthipal Singh, Mohinder Lal, Harbinder Singh, Chand Singh, Mukhben Singh, Varinder Singh, Ajit Singh, Inder Singh are among the great disciples of Sarpal Singh, who was appointed as one of the coaches for the Indian team for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. was named.
Speaking on the occasion, Singh said, “I am extremely grateful to be conferred with the Dronacharya Award for my contribution to field hockey. Once again, I heartily thank the Sports Ministry for this approval and feel really humbled for the same.”
He further added, “It has been an incredible privilege to be a part of India’s glorious hockey history, and I am honored to have played a part in it. Through RoundGlass Sports, I continue my dedication to the sport and will continue to strive to identify and nurture Indian talent to restore the former glory of Punjab and India in field hockey.”
