Musk accuses Biden

Elon Musk, the billionaire tech entrepreneur and owner of X (formerly Twitter), has publicly accused President Joe Biden of committing “treason” over his administration’s handling of border policies. Musk’s remarks were sparked by reports of the Biden administration auctioning off materials that had been allocated for the construction of the US-Mexico border wall, a project initiated under former President Donald Trump but subsequently halted by Biden.

The dispute surrounding Biden’s border policies gained renewed attention in December 2024, when conservative media outlets and social media users highlighted the administration’s actions concerning the unused border wall materials. According to reports, items such as steel beams, razor wire fences, and river barriers that were designated for the wall were being sold at minimal prices-sometimes as low as $5 per piece.

Critics argued that these sales undermined national security and squandered taxpayer money. On January 1, an influential user on X, @EndWokeness, summarized these concerns, alleging that Biden’s administration had issued “94 executive orders to open the border,” removed critical security measures, and facilitated illegal crossings. The post concluded with a call for accountability, branding the administration’s actions as “treason.” Musk echoed these sentiments, amplifying the accusation with a simple response: “100% treason.”

Since taking office in January 2021, Biden has sought to reverse many of Trump’s immigration policies, which were often criticized for their harshness. One of Biden’s earliest moves was to halt construction of the US-Mexico border wall, a signature project of Trump’s first term. Instead, Biden’s administration focused on addressing the root causes of migration, such as poverty and violence in Central America, while implementing more humane border enforcement measures.

However, these policy shifts coincided with an unprecedented surge in illegal crossings, leading to criticism from both Republicans and moderate Democrats. By mid-2024, the Biden administration had adopted stricter measures, including an executive order in June that partially suspended asylum requests when daily unauthorized crossings exceeded 2,500.

Despite these efforts, critics argue that Biden’s policies have failed to secure the border effectively. Republican leaders, including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, have accused the administration of deliberately undermining border security for political reasons.

The controversy over the leftover materials for the border wall has been ongoing for years. After Biden halted the project in early 2021, thousands of tons of construction materials were left unused. The administration argued that these materials were unnecessary and costly to store, prompting Congress to authorize their sale, transfer, or donation.

However, this decision faced legal challenges from Republican leaders who viewed the move as an attempt to dismantle Trump’s legacy and weaken border security. In December 2024, Paxton secured a temporary injunction to block the Biden administration from disposing of any more border wall materials.

The ruling was seen as a victory for Trump, who has pledged to revive and complete the border wall project upon his return to the White House on January 20, 2025. In a statement posted on Truth Social on December 25, Trump celebrated the court’s decision as a “major, crucial WIN for America, and our National Security.” He also criticized Biden for “wrecking” the wall project and vowed to prioritize border security in his second term.

Musk’s accusations and the broader controversy have added fuel to an already heated debate over US immigration policy. Republicans have consistently used Biden’s border policies as a focal point for criticism, portraying them as reckless and harmful to national security. The auctioning of border wall materials has provided fresh ammunition for these attacks, with figures like Musk amplifying the narrative on social media.

For Biden, the accusations of “treason” and the legal challenges to his policies represent a significant political liability as he prepares to leave office. His administration has defended its actions as pragmatic and legally sound, emphasizing that Congress approved the disposal of excess materials. Nevertheless, the perception of mismanagement and leniency at the border has eroded public confidence in his leadership on this issue.

The impending return of Donald Trump to the White House has shifted the political landscape, particularly concerning immigration policy. Trump has promised to resume construction of the border wall and to implement more aggressive measures to curb illegal immigration. His supporters view the court ruling blocking the sale of border wall materials as a key step in fulfilling these promises.

However, Trump’s plans are likely to face significant opposition from Democrats and advocacy groups, who argue that the wall is an ineffective and costly solution to a complex problem. The debate over border security is expected to remain a contentious issue in US politics, with both sides framing it as a matter of national identity and security.

Musk’s comments reflect his increasing involvement in political discourse, particularly on issues that resonate with his largely conservative-leaning audience on X. While his accusation of “treason” is unlikely to have legal implications, it underscores the deep polarization surrounding immigration policy in the United States.

Critics have accused Musk of oversimplifying the issue and using incendiary language to stoke division. Supporters, however, argue that his remarks draw attention to what they see as a critical failure of leadership under Biden.

The controversy over Biden’s border policies and the handling of border wall materials highlights the broader challenges facing US immigration policy. While the Biden administration has sought to balance security concerns with a more compassionate approach to immigration, its actions have sparked fierce opposition and accusations of undermining national security.

As Trump prepares to take office again, the future of the border wall and broader immigration policy remains uncertain. What is clear is that the debate over these issues will continue to shape the political landscape, with figures like Elon Musk amplifying the voices of those who demand accountability and change.
