Dispute between the Meitei community and the Kuki community
The Manipur High Court issued an order on 19 April granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the state’s majority Meitei community. The High Court had directed the government to implement a 10-year-old recommendation to include the non-tribal Meitei community in the tribe. After this order, a dispute started between the Meitei community and the Kuki community in the state and gradually it started taking a violent form.
Opposition to the decision by the Kuki community
The beginning of this violent clash between the Meitei community living in the Imphal valley and the Kuki community living in the hilly areas started over their identity. Let us tell you that the news of continuous violence started coming between the state’s largest tribal community ‘Kuki community’ and the majority ‘Meitei community’ of the state from the end of April. This decision of the High Court was opposed by the Kuki community, after which the people of the Meitei community also retaliated against this protest of the Kuki community.

If we explain in detail then there are 16 districts in Manipur. But, the entire state is divided into two parts, the first being the Imphal Valley, the second being the hill districts. Imphal Valley is a Meitei dominated area. At the same time, the hill districts are dominated by the Naga and Kuki tribes. Especially the people of the Kuki community rule in the four hilly districts. The population of Manipur is about 28 lakhs. In this, the people of Meitei community are about 53 percent. About 10% of the land area of Manipur is in possession of these people.
