Doha won’t be left behind when King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be ceremoniously crowned in London on May 6. Several events, including musical concerts, community gatherings, and other activities, are lined up in the Qatari capital.

The events will be organized in coordination with the British embassy in Doha.

The formal ceremony will take place at London’s Westminster Abbey followed by the traditional pageantry used for anointing monarchs over the last 1,000 years.

Many heads of states, heads of governments, foreign ministers from all over the world will be attending the coronation; and it will be the first big international coronation event, British Ambassador to Qatar H E Jon Wilks CMG said at a press meet yesterday.

“The coronation is a solemn religious service, as well as an occasion for celebration and pageantry,” he added.

The envoy said that across the coronation weekend, there will be opportunities for people to come together in celebration of the historic occasion. Celebrations will focus on four main themes — youth, community service, sustainability and diversity in the British society.

“In Doha the embassy will support a number of events for everybody to celebrate in Qatar,” he said.

A musical concert of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will be held on May 4 at the Qatar National Convention Centre. “So the coronation is a great musical experience as well as a religious service. And we’re going to have some of this great music from past coronations,” said Ambassador Wilks.

“It’s a time of celebration,” he said adding that on May 6, after the coronation a party will be held at the 900 Park in Doha from 4pm.

The Coronation Concert in England will bring global music icons and contemporary stars together in celebration of the historic occasion, and the live broadcast is expected to be screened at different venues in Doha.

“There will be a number of receptions that are being organized, and four hotels — W Doha Hotel, The NED Doha, Four Seasons and The Ritz-Carlton — will also organize events,” said Ambassador Wilks.
