Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday visited the Bhalswa landfill site and said the Delhi government aims to remove 50 lakh metric tonnes of waste from here by March next year.

Kejriwal along with Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi took stock of the progress of the work of removing garbage from the landfill. He said, “The target is to remove 50 lakh tonnes of garbage from here by March next year. Work is going on at double the speed. Delhi will soon be made garbage free.

Kejriwal said that 11,000 metric tonnes of waste is generated daily in Delhi and there is a system for disposal of 8,100 metric tonnes of waste. “It means that 2,900 metric tonnes of waste remains. Expansion work is going on in Okhla to dispose of 1,000 metric tonnes of waste, while a waste to electricity plant in Bawana will be ready by 2026, which will dispose of 2,000 tonnes of waste.

The Chief Minister said that 30 lakh metric tonnes of waste has been removed from the landfill since 2019, while 50 lakh metric tonnes of waste is still there, of which 30 lakh metric tonnes will be removed by December this year. “If work continues like this, there will be no garbage here by April next year,” he said.
