The Army has evacuated over 1,000 tourists, including women and children, stranded in upper Changu area of ​​East Sikkim following heavy snowfall. The officers provided this information.

After heavy snowfall in Nathu La, Somgo (Changu) Lake and its surrounding areas on Wednesday afternoon, the temperature dropped below zero, affecting the movement of tourists, he said.

According to officials, the snowfall made it difficult to drive vehicles, as a result of which over 1,000 tourists and 200 vehicles were stuck in a stretch of 15 km. An official release said that troops deployed in the area launched the rescue operation and after an eight-hour operation, the tourists were brought to a safe place.

“All tourists are being provided accommodation, hot food, warm clothing and critical medical assistance,” the release said.
