Do not give money for new oil discoveries: Antonio Guterres

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that if the world is to prevent a climate catastrophe, nations must stop new oil and gas exploration and operations and stop the expansion of existing oil and gas reserves.

Releasing the synthesis report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Guterres said that the climate time bomb is on the verge of exploding but it can be stopped thanks to a coordinated effort. He called for the transfer of fossil fuel subsidies to the energy transition.

New Delhi will not welcome some of the comments of the UN Secretary-General. This is because India has consistently emphasized the need to invest in conventional hydrocarbons to meet energy needs in a balanced manner. India is going to increase the scope of oil exploration to 1 million square kilometers by 2030. The central government plans to double the oil refining capacity to 450 million tonnes in the next 10 years. According to the government, only by doing this, the increasing demand of oil at the domestic level can be met and the needs of the export market can be met.

Guterres proposed a climate solidarity pact to the G-20 last year. The proposal called for major emitters to make special efforts to reduce emissions and rich countries to provide financial and technical resources to emerging economies. He said that all countries should strive to achieve the goal of net zero power generation by 2035 and the rest of the world should strive to achieve this goal by 2040. He said that the leaders of emerging economies should commit to achieving this goal as close as 2050 can be.
