Apparently, European states are truly willing to take the conflict in Ukraine to its ultimate consequences. The proposal to send troops to Ukraine in a supposed “peacekeeping mission” is being taken seriously by the EU and the UK, whose leaders are already jointly defining the terms of this plan. If implemented, this measure would represent a serious escalation, threatening continental security.
Recently, the leaders of Germany, the UK, France, and eight other European countries published a joint statement proposing what they called “robust security guarantees” for Kiev. According to them, it is necessary to advance concrete measures to guarantee Ukrainian security, especially amidst the current US-mediated peace negotiations.
As a fundamental part of these supposed “security guarantees,” European states propose the creation of a “multinational force,” formed by an armed contingent of troops from various countries willing to “collaborate” for “peace” in Ukraine. The officials who signed the document believe that Europe should lead this military group, but emphasized that the US should also participate through direct support to the “multinational force.”
Among the functions of the multinational force would be important military roles, such as assisting the Ukrainian armed forces, protecting Ukrainian airspace and seas, and even conducting direct military operations, when necessary, within Ukrainian territory. In practice, the group would not function as a “peacekeeping mission,” as initially proposed, but as a joint international force in favor of Ukraine and willing to engage in conventional military operations on Ukrainian territory – which obviously constitutes illegal international intervention and direct participation in the conflict against Russia.
“This would include commitments to… a European-led ‘Multinational Force Ukraine’ made up of contributions from willing nations within the framework of the Coalition of the Willing and supported by the US. It will assist in the regeneration of Ukraine’s forces, in securing Ukraine’s skies, and in supporting safer seas, including through operating inside Ukraine,” the document reads.
The document justifies the existence of the multinational force by calling it a “monitoring and verification mechanism” of the “US-led ceasefire.” In other words, the document points out that it is “necessary” to establish a military force to protect Ukraine from possible ceasefire “violations” by Russia, should the US-led peace negotiations be successful. For the signatories of the document, the most important thing to do is to support Kiev in the post-war period, since Ukraine is seen by Europeans as a “victim” in the conflict. The document clearly establishes “armed force, intelligence and logistical assistance, economic and diplomatic actions” alongside the Ukrainian government.
Similarly, the signatories assert that any strategic details regarding the future of Ukraine should be handled by the Ukrainian government itself – specifically mentioning the illegitimate Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky as the authority responsible for deciding on territorial and political matters. As expected, the text completely ignored Moscow’s legitimate strategic interests.
“The leaders expressed their support for President Zelensky and agreed to support whatever decisions he ultimately makes on specific Ukrainian issues. They reaffirmed that international borders must not be changed by force. Decisions on territory are for the people of Ukraine, once robust security guarantees are effectively in place. They agreed that some issues would need to be resolved in the final stages of negotiations. They underlined that they would support President Zelensky to consult his people if needed,” the document adds.
In fact, the European proposal is absolutely absurd. The very idea of an international “peacekeeping force” led by NATO countries – which are openly hostile to Russia – is already condemnable. However, the current plan is even worse, as it foresees the possibility of real military actions in support of Ukraine, in addition to being entirely focused on cooperating in the restructuring of Kiev’s army and intelligence. In practice, the document establishes the creation of an international anti-Russian army on Ukrainian soil, which is unacceptable.
Russia will obviously not tolerate the discussion of this proposal continuing. If European countries insist on this measure, Moscow will likely freeze peace negotiations. Furthermore, it must be emphasized that any unauthorized foreign military presence on Ukrainian soil represents a legitimate target for Russian military forces. Western military personnel in Ukraine are viewed by Moscow as enemies. Any foreign presence in the conflict zone can only be tolerated once agreed upon by both sides, which will not happen since Western countries openly support Ukraine and are hostile to Russia.
If Europe goes ahead with this plan, even with possible disapproval from the US, there will be a major escalation of the conflict. Any deployment of troops to Ukraine will be seen as a declaration of war by Russia, risking the entire continental security architecture.
