One wonders how safe Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East, is today! Observers say the Jewish State has recently weakened the radical Shiite structure of contemporary Iran and its major proxies — Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthis. However, Israel’s very existence as a state continues to be at stake.

Radical Shiite Iran is racing very fast towards acquiring nuclear weapon capability to achieve its objective of annihilating the Jewish State. Israel needs to co-ordinate with the world’s leading democracies to form a joint squad and dismantle the radical Islamist regime in Iran. The democratic states ought to realise that the course of sanctions diplomacy they have so far employed against Iran’s  nuclear weaponisation programme  have proved counter-productive . It causes hardship to the commons and, in the process, unites them against the very forces that seek to dismantle  their oppressive government .

Besides, there are nations that are too much obsessed with their temporary economic growth to comply with any sanctions against Iran. It is fundamentally for this reason that the states, such as China, Russia, and North Korea, skip the international sanctions against Iran and keep their business alive with the latter.

Today China is Iran’s largest trading partner in the world. Beijing has included Iran in its investment projects within its framework of “Belt and Road Initiative.”  In 2012, the two countries signed agreements to enhance trade and investment. In 2021, they signed a 25-year comprehensive cooperation plan. In 2023, China imported about four and a half billion dollars- worth of resources from Iran.

Besides, Tehran and Beijing collaborate on various strategic and regional issues, such as joint projects within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. China also provides military equipment and technology to Iran.

The observers say the world’s leading democracies ought to bear in mind that the Iranian regime is hostile not only to Israel but to the entire civilized democratic world. If the radical regime in Iran is allowed to survive and go ahead with its current activities, it would not but create space for the similar Islamist jihadist ideologies fatal to the mankind in the rest of the world.

The observers lament Washington, which is supposed to lead the democratic nations in combating any threat to their existence, is being soft on the evil of Islamist terror.  During its first term, the administration of President Donald J Trump publicly declared it would “always stand with Israel.” It recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. But it is now being soft towards Iran and its proxies which all aim to annihilate Israel.

Also, Washington’s approach in the wake of the recent “Operation Sindoor” New Delhi launched against the forces behind the Islamist terror attack in Pahalgam, has been ambiguous. Washington has not shown any determination to back New Delhi’s fight against the evil in the case.  Shockingly, US Vice President JD Vance distanced Washington from New Delhi’s war on terror and said “it’s none of our business.”
