In the corridors of power, where the idealism of public service often clashes with the temptations of corruption, the story of Motiur Rahman stands as a potent reminder of how greed can overshadow duty. As a high-ranking official of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh, Rahman’s life reads like a dramatic movie script filled with immense wealth, intricate family dynamics, and a public scandal of epic proportions. This article delves deeper into his rise to wealth, the network of corruption that supported it, and the dramatic fallout that has ensnared his family and reputation.

Motiur Rahman’s wealth is best exemplified by the lavish homes he built for his two wives, Laila Kaniz Lucky and Shammi Akther Shibly, under the names of various relatives. These homes are more than just residences; they symbolize the heights of his financial success and the depths of his corruption. The collection of nine luxury cars, including brands such as Mercedes, BMW, and Prado, is another glaring indication of his extravagant lifestyle. However, beneath this veneer of opulence lies a web of illicit activities and financial misconduct.

An investigation into Motiur Rahman’s financial activities reveals a staggering accumulation of wealth through a variety of illegal means. His career at the NBR provided ample opportunities for bribery, which became a significant source of his fortune. Motiur’s corruption extended beyond simple bribes. He misused his power to establish businesses and factories in the names of his family members, thereby camouflaging his assets and expanding his financial empire.

A particularly lucrative scheme involved exploiting duty-free import facilities to bring goods into the country, which he then sold on the open market at a significant profit. This not only violated import regulations but also deprived the government of substantial revenue. Furthermore, Motiur was implicated in stock market manipulation, where his insider knowledge and financial muscle allowed him to amass significant profits, amounting to several thousand millions of Bangladeshi Taka.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which upended lives worldwide, also played a pivotal role in the unraveling of Motiur’s empire. As he battled a severe case of the virus, teetering on the brink of death, his younger wife, Shammi Akther Shibly, remained by his side. In a moment of vulnerability, Motiur signed several blank checks, intending to secure his family’s financial future should he succumb to the illness. However, this act of trust turned into a monumental betrayal when Shammi allegedly cashed checks worth around BDT 3 billion. This was confirmed by a close associate who witnessed the cashing of a BDT 500 million check.

The scandal surrounding Motiur Rahman’s family reached its zenith when his son, Mushfequr Rahman Ifat, went viral on social media. A video showing Ifat purchasing a goat for BDT 1.5 million sparked outrage and curiosity about his luxurious lifestyle, which included high-end watches, expensive cars, and a generally opulent existence. This raised immediate questions about how Ifat could afford such extravagance on the salary of a government employee’s son.

In a desperate bid to deflect criticism, Motiur Rahman publicly denied being Ifat’s father. This denial was seen by many as a strategic move to distance himself from the controversy. However, family insiders confirmed Ifat’s identity, underscoring that Motiur’s denial was merely an attempt to mitigate public outrage. The potential for a DNA test to confirm Ifat’s paternity loomed large, threatening to expose further falsehoods.

Motiur Rahman’s two wives, Laila Kaniz Lucky and Shammi Akther Shibly, played significant roles in his life and benefited immensely from his wealth. Laila Kaniz Lucky, his elder wife, transitioned from an associate professor at Titumir Government College to a powerful political figure, becoming the Chairman of Raipura Upazila Parishad of Narsingdi. Her political ascent was facilitated by her husband’s financial resources and strategic alliances with influential politicians, particularly MP Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju.

Laila Kaniz Lucky’s transformation into a political heavyweight was marked by her ownership of Wonder Park and Eco Resort, an entertainment center and eco-resort spanning 150 acres in Morjal. This project, a stark deviation from her academic career, signaled her integration into the world of high-stakes politics and business.

Laila’s rise to power was significantly influenced by her association with MP Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju. Following the death of Raipura Upazila Parishad Chairman Sadekur Rahman in 2023, Laila Kaniz Lucky left her teaching job to contest the by-election for the vacant position. Backed by her husband’s wealth and MP Raju’s political clout, she was elected unopposed. Her position within the ruling Awami League, as the Disaster, Relief, and Social Welfare Affairs Secretary of the Narsingdi District committee, further solidified her political standing.

Shammi Akther, Motiur’s second wife, hails from Sonagazi, Feni. Her brother, Arifur Rahman, provided insights into the family’s dynamics. Shammi married Motiur 25 years ago, and her family’s fortunes were closely tied to Motiur’s success. Following the death of Shammi’s father, a retired bank officer, Motiur brought Shammi’s mother, sister, and brother-in-law to Dhaka. He facilitated their education and careers, with Shammi’s brother, Naqib, becoming a pivotal figure in managing Motiur’s business operations.

Motiur’s meteoric rise and subsequent fall have not gone unnoticed by the local communities in Raipura and Narsingdi. Former Warrant Officer Nazrul Islam recounted his personal ordeal with Motiur Rahman, detailing how his land was encroached upon by Motiur Rahman through partial payments and administrative intimidation. Despite promises, the remaining payments were never made, and the land was forcibly occupied for Motiur’s park project.

Sanjida Sultana Nasima, a former union chairman, echoed the community’s sentiments, highlighting the implausibility of Motiur Rahman’s wealth accumulation purely through government service. Raipura Upazila Awami League President Afzal Hossain pointed to the immense wealth amassed by Laila Kaniz Lucky, suggesting that it was built on the foundation of Rahman’s illegal earnings. He criticized MP Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju for bolstering Laila’s political career with Motiur’s illicit funds, to the detriment of local party politics.

The downfall of Motiur Rahman has been swift and unforgiving. Public and media scrutiny has intensified, revealing the extent of his corruption and the complicity of his family members. Motiur’s attempts to distance himself from his actions and family have been largely unsuccessful, and the prospect of DNA testing to confirm Ifat’s parentage looms large.

Legal investigations are ongoing, with authorities seeking to untangle the complex web of corruption that Motiur Rahman wove over his career. The involvement of high-profile figures and the substantial sums of money at stake suggest that the investigations will be protracted and intricate.

The saga of Motiur Rahman is a cautionary tale of how power and corruption can consume even those entrusted with public service. His rise to immense wealth, facilitated by bribery, manipulation, and abuse of power, has not only tarnished his legacy but also brought undue scrutiny and hardship to his family. As the legal proceedings unfold, Motiur’s story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity, transparency, and accountability in public service.

The ultimate fate of Motiur Rahman and his family will depend on the thoroughness of the legal investigations and the unwavering pursuit of justice by the authorities. In the meantime, the story of Motiur Rahman remains a potent symbol of the perils of unchecked power and the enduring need for vigilance against corruption.
