Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, has embarked on a two-day state visit to Bangladesh, marking a significant moment in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. This visit comes at the invitation of Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, underlining the importance both nations place on their ties.
This landmark visit is poised to be a fruitful one, with plans to sign 11 cooperation documents, comprising 6 agreements and 5 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). These documents aim to further solidify the cooperation between Bangladesh and Qatar across various sectors.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time a Qatari Emir has visited Bangladesh. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the previous Emir of Qatar, visited in April 2005. The current high-level visit, however, is taking place after a gap of 19 years and holds special significance. Notably, this is also the first high-level state visit from a Middle Eastern country since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assumed office in January 2024.
The diplomatic ties between Qatar and Bangladesh trace back to March 4, 1974, when the State of Qatar officially recognized Bangladesh as a sovereign nation during the 2nd Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit. This was followed by Bangladesh establishing its diplomatic mission in Doha in 1975, with Qatar reciprocating by opening its mission in Dhaka in 1982.
The relationship between Bangladesh and Qatar is built on a foundation of mutual respect, shared values, religious affinity, and cultural ties. People-to-people connections play a vital role in this relationship, with more than 400,000 Bangladeshis contributing to Qatar’s workforce. These Bangladeshi workers are highly regarded for their dedication and hard work, and it is hoped that the Emir’s visit will pave the way for further opportunities for Bangladeshi workers in Qatar.
Over the years, the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Qatar have flourished, evidenced by the signing of numerous MoUs and agreements. Both nations are now keen on elevating their partnership to new heights by enhancing cooperation in areas such as manpower, energy, trade, and investment. Furthermore, Bangladesh and Qatar view each other as crucial development partners, aligning with Bangladesh’s Vision 2041 and Qatar’s Vision 2030.
Despite the positive momentum in bilateral relations, the Emir’s visit comes at a critical juncture, with escalating tensions in the Middle East casting a shadow. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine continues to result in loss of innocent lives, while the increasing hostilities between Israel and Iran threaten to plunge the region into a full-scale war. In this context, it is expected that global issues, including the Palestine-Israel conflict, will be on the agenda for discussion during the Emir’s visit. Bangladesh is likely to articulate its stance on these issues, advocating for peace and stability in the region.
