Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has recently announced the detention of suspected militants allegedly linked to the heinous terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow. According to the FSB, a group of four individuals apprehended in Dagestan is believed to have played a significant role in orchestrating and facilitating the massacre, which resulted in the deaths of over 140 innocent civilians. This information was reported by Russian RT News, citing statements from the FSB.
According to the FSB, the detained militants were involved in financing and supplying equipment for the deadly attack on the concert hall. The security service described the group as a terrorist cell comprised of foreign nationals who had allegedly been planning a mass-casualty assault in the southern city of Kaspiysk, intending to utilize automatic firearms and explosives. Furthermore, the FSB revealed that the group had plans to flee Russia immediately after executing their plot, with the intention of crossing the Russia-Ukraine border.
FSB underscored the suspects’ direct complicity in furnishing financial resources and logistical support to the perpetrators of the attack. In a video disseminated by the security service, the suspects’ identities were obscured, yet one confessed to personally supplying firearms to those responsible for the Crocus City Hall assault. Moreover, CCTV footage was unveiled, purportedly capturing the suspects’ movements near the presumed location of the attackers’ lodging. These revelations serve as crucial evidence in unraveling the intricate web of involvement surrounding the tragic incident.
FSB’s statement also implicated a total of 12 individuals who have been detained in Russia due to suspected links to the Crocus City Hall massacre. Among them, eight individuals, including the alleged gunmen, are facing potential life imprisonment if convicted on terrorism charges.
While an Afghanistan-based offshoot of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the Crocus City Hall attack, the head of the FSB, Aleksandr Bortnikov, has raised suspicions about potential involvement from the United States, United Kingdom, and Ukraine. Bortnikov suggested that these countries may have utilized radical Islamists to carry out the attack and even expressed the possibility of the suspects being welcomed as heroes in Ukraine had they managed to escape there.
Additionally, the Investigative Committee of Russia has disclosed “substantial evidence” indicating a connection between the suspects and Ukrainian nationalists. The committee alleged that considerable amounts of money were transferred from Ukraine in the form of cryptocurrency before the assault, deepening suspicions of external interference in the tragic incident.
