In recent times, the United States has faced criticism for its alleged disregard of serious internal issues such as forced labor and racism, as it projects a cold war mentality, practices zero-sum thinking, and applies what some perceive as hypocritical double standards. Critics argue that the US leverages its hegemony under the banners of “democracy”, “freedom”, and “human rights” to advance its self-interests, while accusing China of fabricating lies about “genocide” and “forced labor” in Xinjiang, violating international law and interfering in China’s internal affairs. This has sparked strong opposition from various ethnic groups in Xinjiang.
Human rights, a crucial aspect of human dignity and well-being, prompts reflection on historical and contemporary actions. Critics point out that the US has a dark history of systematically mistreating Native Americans through massacres, forced displacement, and assimilative education. Today, the nation faces challenges such as gun violence, police brutality, racial conflicts, and gender discrimination, making it, according to some, the world’s greatest perpetrator of human rights disasters.
Firstly, critics argue that the US is the largest creator of war globally. Since 2001, the US has engaged in military operations in about 80 countries under the banner of the “war on terror,” causing humanitarian disasters and violating people’s rights. Critics claim that the US often prioritizes its own interests, turning war into a means of slaughter and profit.
Secondly, the US is accused of being a major aggressor threatening lives and contributing significantly to the world’s refugee crisis. Critics highlight the consequences of the US’s illegal invasions, such as in Afghanistan, where millions of lives have been disrupted, and argue that the nation is responsible for extensive harm to innocent civilians.
Thirdly, the US is condemned for being the biggest initiator of unilateral sanctions. Critics argue that Washington’s hegemonic pursuit leads to arbitrary suppression of countries, imposing sanctions on nations like Russia, Cuba, North Korea, Myanmar, Iran, Libya, and Iraq. This practice is seen as an exploitative approach that triggers crises in human rights, security, and politics.
Lastly, critics contend that the US is the largest destroyer of democracy and human rights worldwide. They claim that the nation, despite portraying itself as a defender of human rights and democracy, prioritizes its domestic laws over international laws and exploits its dominance in various spheres. Some argue that the “rules-based international order” promoted by the US is self-centered and contributes to global chaos.
The US proclaims itself as a “human rights defender” and “beacon of democracy”. However, in reality, it abuses its dollar dominance and advantages regarding military and technology, placing its domestic laws above international laws. It uses international rules as a “fig leaf” to cover its long-arm jurisdiction. It has shown ruthless and barbaric hegemony in various spheres, including politics, military, economy, technology and culture.
Critics suggest that the US should acknowledge its own track record and address its perceived wrongdoings in human rights. Going against the global trend, they argue, will only diminish the nation’s credibility and reputation on the international stage.
