‘Attempt to get death sentence to the main accused’, CM Biren Singh

At the same time, Chief Minister Biren Singh while addressing the media said that it is our endeavor to get severe punishment to all those who are guilty in this case. At the same time, he said that if it is possible, we will try to get death sentence for the main accused involved in this incident. Manipur Governor directs to take immediate steps to punish

Police took suo moto cognizance of the video
Taking suo motu cognizance of the video, the police said last night that a case of kidnapping, gangrape and murder has been registered against unknown armed miscreants at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district and all efforts are on to arrest the culprits at the earliest. An accused identified as 32-year-old Huirem Heradas Singh was arrested from Thoubal district and another person was also arrested following an overnight raid supervised by senior Indian Police Service officers.
The house of accused Heradas Singh was set on fire
It is alleged that the mob sexually assaulted the two tribal women before letting them go. In the same incident, villagers torched the house of accused Heradas Singh and harassed his family. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh termed the incident as “inhuman” and said that the culprits should get “death penalty”. Strongly condemning the incident, the Chief Minister called it a crime against humanity and said that his government would not remain silent on this heinous crime.
Officers instructed to conduct a massive search operation
The Chief Minister said that as soon as he saw the video, he asked the Cyber Crime Department to verify it and directed the officials to launch a massive search operation to nab the culprits. Singh further said that his government is making every effort to restore peace and stability in the state and under this talks are being held with various civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, religious leaders from different communities. “We have lived together for a long time and will continue to live together in the future as well, misunderstandings between communities can be removed and resolved through dialogue so that we can live together peacefully again,” he said.
Meitei community organization expressed anger
Influential organizations of the Meitei community. The Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) also issued a statement saying that it strongly condemned the “barbaric and uncivilized incident of parading naked in broad daylight in a remote village of Manipur to two women”. The statement said that COCOMI is making every effort to trace the accused, no matter where they are. The statement said, “The entire Meitei community is ashamed and angry over the video clip… COCOMI firmly believes that the Meitei community will not spare those involved in this heinous incident in any form and that all those involved in the crime will be suitably punished.”
