Mango Day is celebrated every year on 22 April in India. This day is celebrated to recognize and promote the importance of mango. The main objective of Mango Day is to awaken the importance of Indian mango and encourage it to become a world class mango producing country. On this day exhibition of different types of mangoes, information about production of mangoes, exhibition of various products made of mangoes and tasting of dishes made of mangoes are done.

The word mango comes from the Malayan word for “manna”, and the seeds of this fruit spread from Asia to many other regions of the world, establishing their presence there. The mango is revered in India as a symbol of love and friendship, and its leaves, bark, skin, kernel, and flesh have been used in folk remedies for centuries. Mango is also related to cashew and pistachio, all of which belong to the Anacardiaceae family.

Delhi government had proposed

The proposal to organize Mango Day in India was first raised by the government in Delhi, and its main objective was to promote the production of mangoes in India. It started as a cultural and rural exhibition in which mango fruits are displayed and sold. Due to this, the mango growers get more marketing and profit from their crop. Kannapuram in Kannur district of Kerala has been declared as ‘Indigenous Mango Heritage Area’.

Main Varieties of Mango

There are innumerable varieties of mangoes in India. All varieties have their own fragrance and each has its own taste. Even the form and color are different. Varieties of mangoes are identified by these fragrances, taste and color. Some of the major types and states of their production are described.

1. Limb Mango: This mango is found in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Its peel is light green and it has a juicy and sweet taste.

 2. Dussehri Mango: This mango is found around Malihabad and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. Its peel is white and it has a juicy and sweet taste.

 3. Alphonso Mango: This mango is found in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra. Its peel is yellow and it has a juicy and sweet taste. It is also known as “Hapus”.

 4. Saffron Mango: This mango is found around Girnar and Junagadh in Gujarat. Its peel is yellow and it has a juicy and slightly sour taste.

5. Totapuri Mango: This mango is found in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Its peel is yellow and it has a juicy and sour taste. Its shape is long, due to which it is also known as “Totapuri”.

 6. Safeda Mango: This mango is found in parts of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Its peel is white and it has a juicy and slightly sour taste.

 7. Chausa Mango: This mango is found around Bhagalpur and Banka in Bihar. Its peel is yellow and it has a juicy and sweet taste.

This state is at the forefront of mango production

Where UP is at the forefront in terms of mango production, then Andhra Pradesh is at number two. Where total 20.04 percent of mangoes are produced, then there is Bihar where 11.19 percent is produced. At number four is Karnataka with 8.06 percent production and fifth is Tamil Nadu with 5.65 percent production of mangoes followed by Gujarat with 5.53 percent production. Apart from these, there are many other states where the remaining 30 percent of mangoes are produced.
