New Delhi, 20 July (Hindustan Times). Current world No. 1 male and female tennis players Carlos Alcaraz and Inga Swiatek top the respective entry lists for the US Open Grand Slam tournament 2023. This list is issued by the United States Tennis Organization, the organizer of the tournament.

This year’s US Open is scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. Both Alcaraz and Swiatek will enter the tournament to defend their titles. The main draw cutoff ranking for men’s singles in this year’s US Open is 96 while it is 100 for women’s singles.

Three-time champion Novak Djokovic is also set to return to the USA for the first time in two years. He had missed last year’s edition due to the vaccine protocol. Under protocol, international travelers are required to have the COVID-19 vaccination. He will also be joined by former champion Daniil Medvedev. Also taking part will be Kasper Ruud, Holger Roon, Stefanos Tsitsipas and American pair Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.

Other notable men’s singles players who entered with protected rankings are 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, Kei Nishikori, Gael Monfils and Milos Raonic. Former world No. 4 Nishikori, who was out for 2021, returned to competition with confidence by winning the ATP Challenger event in Puerto Rico in June.

In women’s singles, alongside Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka are involved. They will be joined by top Americans Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff and reigning Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova. 2021 Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady, who is playing her first tournament in nearly two years in Granby, Canada this week, is expected to play in her first major since Roland Garros in 2021.

The list does not feature four-time champion Rafael Nadal as he is out due to a hip injury sustained during the Australian Open. Similarly, 2021 US Open champion Emma Radukanu has not been listed as she underwent surgeries on both her hands and ankles.
