Qatar Energy announced the signing of the main engineering, procurement and construction contract for the North South Field project, which includes two giant liquefied natural gas (LNG) trains with a total production capacity of 16 million tons per year.
This project, along with the North East Field project, will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from the current 77 million tons per year to 126 million tons per year. Qatar Energy owns a 75% stake in the project, as it had signed partnership agreements with Total Energies, Shell and ConocoPhillips for the remaining 25% stake.
The announcement came during a ceremony held on the occasion of awarding the main engineering, procurement and construction contract for the two LNG production lines and associated facilities to a joint venture consisting of Technip Energies and Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC).
The agreement was signed by His Excellency Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Energy, Mr. Arnaud Biton, President of Technip Energies, and Mr. Osama Al-Jarbi, Managing Director of the Region (Qatar) in the Consolidated Contractors Company, in the presence of Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al-Thani, CEO of Qatargas and senior executives from Qatar Energy, Qatargas, Technip Energies and Consolidated Contractors.

He added, “The North South Field project is a unique project of its kind, as it was specially designed in a way that reduces its environmental impact. The project includes one of the largest carbon dioxide capture and sequestration facilities, which is an important step towards achieving the goal of Qatar’s energy strategy to capture and sequester more than 11 million tons of carbon dioxide per year by 2035.”
His Excellency Minister Al-Kaabi thanked the managements of Qatar Energy and Qatargas and their work teams for their sincere and dedicated efforts in implementing the North Field expansion projects, and to the management and employees of Technip Energies and the Consolidated Contractors for their contributions. His Excellency expressed his great gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, may God protect him, for his wise guidance and unlimited support for Qatar Energy and the energy sector in Qatar.
The main engineering, procurement and construction contract, valued at approximately US$10 billion, includes the construction of two LNG trains with a capacity of 8 million tons per year each, in addition to associated facilities for gas processing and recovery of natural gas liquids, as well as helium extraction and refining in Ras Laffan. industrial.
In addition to the carbon dioxide capture and storage facilities, the project’s environmental benefits include importing a large portion of its electrical needs from the grid via renewable solar energy, which will be generated in Qatar Energy’s solar projects currently under construction in Ras Laffan Industrial City. The JVG recovery system will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the project will save five million cubic meters of water annually by recovering 75% of industrial wastewater, while nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions will be reduced through the application of improved Dry Low NOx technology.
