Bareilly: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has suffered a major setback due to the results of the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Elections 2023. After the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, 2022, the BSP’s performance in the civic elections has also been very poor. bsp chief Mayawati Under the “DM” (Dalit-Muslim) formula of party founder Kashiram, had given tickets to Muslim candidates in 11 out of 17 municipal corporations, so that the flag of victory could be hoisted in the municipal elections.

Mayawati’s bet did not work and the party did not get a single seat in the municipal corporation, whereas in the last civic elections of 2017, the BSP had won Meerut and Aligarh. BSP could not even save this seat. However, initially the BSP tried to win the Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Moradabad, Aligarh and Agra Municipal Corporation seats. But, after the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj, the candidate had to be changed in Prayagraj. With this, this seat also became weak.

Tickets to 11 Muslim mayor candidates

The BSP fielded Muslim candidates in 11 out of 17 municipal corporations in UP. But there was no victory anywhere. The BSP fielded Muslim candidates in Meerut, Aligarh, Lucknow, Mathura, Firozabad, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Moradabad, Shahjahanpur L, Ghaziabad and Bareilly. But, could not win anywhere.

Bahedi- Nawabganj municipality went out of hand

BSP has suffered a big defeat in Bareilly. Out of 80 wards of Municipal Corporation, not even one ward has won. The BSP candidate had won last time in Bareilly’s Nawabganj and Bahedi municipalities. The BSP lost both these seats as well. It was very important in both the municipality. However, the BSP candidate contested the election very strongly in Faridpur. She stood second. In the Nagar Panchayats also, the BSP had performed much better last time. But this time BSP candidate Lal Qureshi has won in Bisharatganj Nagar Panchayat.

One MLA left in the assembly

In the year 2007, BSP formed the government with full majority in Uttar Pradesh. But, in the assembly elections 2022, only one MLA of BSP has won the election. However, the BSP fielded Muslim candidates in 88 out of 430 seats. But, not a single one won here.

Dalit also left

The vote percentage of BSP has also dropped significantly in the assembly elections. BSP got about 13 percent votes. Whereas, there are more than 22 percent Dalit votes in UP.

National party status in danger

From the Legislative Assembly to the Legislative Council of BSP, the members are decreasing. Since the year 2012, the vote percentage of BSP is falling in the assembly elections. In 2017, 22.24 percent votes were left. Due to this the party was reduced to only 19 seats. There was no increase in the vote of BSP even in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and only 13 percent votes are left in 2023.

The National Parties Election Symbol Reservation Allocation Order 1968 states that a political party can be recognized as a national party if it wins 2 percent of the seats in the Lok Sabha from at least three different states. Secures 6% of the votes polled in at least 4 states or more in Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha elections, or wins at least 4 Lok Sabha seats. However, in 2016 the rules were amended. After this, instead of every 5 years, there is a review of the national and state party in 10 years.
