NHRC concerned over increase in child sexual abuse material on social media, issued notice

New Delhi, May 16 (Hindustan Times). The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to states expressing concern over the 250 to 300 per cent increase in circulation of Child Sexual Abuse Material (SiSAM) on social media.

The Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report in this regard on Tuesday. The alleged CSAM material is foreign and Indian investigative agencies are yet to detect any Indian-made CSAM.

The Commission issued notices to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, Directors General of Police of all States/UTs, Director, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and Secretary, Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to take steps to prevent such menace on social media A detailed report has been sought within six weeks on the steps taken.

The NHRC is concerned about the ill effects of online child sexual abuse material on human rights. This can cause irreparable psychological harm to children, affecting their growth and development. The Commission has been organizing dialogues from time to time in the recent past to find ways and means to curb this menace.
