Bengaluru : The results for the Karnataka assembly elections are going to be declared today. This election is being considered as the semi-final of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for the political parties of India. To achieve victory, all national and regional political parties including BJP, Congress, JDS have put their full strength. Congress state president DK Shivakumar, former chief ministers Siddaramaiah, Jagadish Shettar, BJP’s BS Yeddyurappa, Yeddyurappa’s son Vijayendra and JDS leader and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy are the big faces and veteran politicians on whom big stakes have been made. Congress and BJP are claiming their respective victories. It remains to be seen that on whose head the voters of Karnataka have voted to crown on May 10, it will be decided by today’s results. DK Shivakumar

Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar i.e. DK Shivakumar was born on 15 May 1962 and he is currently the State President of Karnataka Congress. He has also been the Minister of State for Irrigation in HD Kumaraswamy’s cabinet. Prior to this, he has served as the Minister of Energy in the Government of Karnataka under the Siddaramaiah government. He had won from Kanakapura constituency in the last election. He defeated HD Deve Gowda from Sathanur in 1989 and became a minister in the government. The rivalry with HD Deve Gowda continued in Bengaluru Rural, with HD Deve Gowda getting the better of him only once in 2002 in Kanakapura. In 1999, he defeated HD Kumaraswamy from Sathanur. Shivakumar had also defeated JDS Maharathi PGR Scindia in Kanakapura when he won the Kanakapura constituency during the elections in 2013. In this, Shivakumar got 1,00,007 votes and JDS’s PGR Scindia got 68,583 votes. During the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections, he won with a margin of around 80,000 votes.

Siddaramaiah

Siddaramaiah is the former Chief Minister of Karnataka and one of the veteran Congress leaders. If Congress wins from here, Siddaramaiah is considered to be the strongest contender for the post of Chief Minister. He has led the Congress government in the state from 2013 to 2018. If the party gets enough numbers to form the government, then once again he can be the choice for the post of CM. The age of 76-year-old Siddaramaiah and some decisions for the previous government may also go against him, which has reduced his popularity among the Hindu and Lingayat communities. These included glorification of Tipu Sultan and the release of PFI and SDPI workers.

Jagdish Shettar

Jagadish Shivappa Shettar was born on 17 December 1955 and has been the former Chief Minister of Karnataka State. As a former member of the BJP, he has won the Hubli Rural seat of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Earlier he was the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during 2008-2009. His father SS Shettar was a senior Jana Sangh leader and has been the mayor of Hubli-Dharwad five times. His uncle Sadashiv Shettar was an influential leader of the Jana Sangh in South India and was elected MLA from Hubli city in 1967. Jagdish Shettar b. Com and has obtained the degree of LLB. Jagdish Shettar started his political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and later joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. In 1990, he was elected President of Hubli Rural Unit of BJP and in 1994 elected President of Dharwad District Unit. He was elected MLA for the first time in 1994. In 1996 he became the State Secretary of the BJP and in 1999 he was elected Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. In 2005, he became the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, then in the same year he became the revenue minister in the BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government.

HD Kumaraswamy

Haradanahalli Deve Gowda Kumaraswamy was born on 16 December 1959. He served as the 12th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 23 May 2018 to 23 July 2019. He is the former President of Janata Dal (Secular) and former Chief Minister of Karnataka as well as the son of former Prime Minister of India HD Deve Gowda. Kumaraswamy has served two terms as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2006 to 2007 and from 2018 to 2019. He resigned as Chief Minister on 23 July 2019 after his coalition government to the Bharatiya Janata Party lost a no-confidence motion in the 15th Legislative Assembly.
