Kerala has topped the list of states to get Geographical Indication (GI) status for the highest number of products in the country during 2022-23. This information was received from the data released on Wednesday by the GI Registry.

According to the registry data, Attappadi Attucombu Avara, Attappadi Thuvara, Onattukara Elu, Kanthalur-Vattavada Veluthulli and Kodungallur Pottuvellari have been given GI status.

Apart from these six products from Kerala, Mithila Makhana from Bihar, White Onion from Alibaug, Tandoor Red Gram from Maharashtra, Raktse Karpo Apricot from Ladakh, Gamosa (Gamcha) from Assam have also been given GI status.

GI status is mainly given to any agricultural, natural or manufactured product (handicrafts and industrial goods) produced in a particular geographical area. Apart from these, the locally produced Brandy de Jerez of Spain and Provolone Valpadan (a kind of cheese/paneer) from Italy have also received this honour.

Earlier, 50 products from domestic and foreign markets were given GI tag in 2021-22, out of which maximum seven products were from Uttar Pradesh.
