Thailand Election: Registration of candidacy begins

Thailand is set to hold its next general election on Sunday, May 14, 2023, where more than 52 million eligible voters across 400 constituencies shall cast their votes in favor of their favorite candidates.

Amid next general election, process of registration of candidates has begun on April 3, 2023, where large number of people gathered at the Bangkok Youth Center (Thai-Japanese Stadium) to show their support for their favorite political parties on the first day of the application of constituency candidate registration.

Key figures of political parties arrived together with candidates. They were Prawit Wongsuwon of Palang Pracharath, Prayut Chan-ocha of United Thai Nation, Paetongtarn Shinawatra of Pheu Thai, Pita Limcharoenrat of Move Forward, Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan of Thai Sang Thai,  Jurin Laksanawisit of the Democrat, Korn Chatikavanij of Chatpattanakla and Putthipong Punnakant of Bhumjaithai.

The constituency candidate registration will run until Friday, April 7, 2023 at designated venues nationwide while party-list candidate registration will begin on April 4, 2023.

The general election is set for Sunday May 14. More than 52 million people are eligible to vote across 400 constituencies.

Process of Bangkok’s 33 constituencies

MP candidates for Bangkok’s 33 constituencies completed drawing their candidacy numbers after the registration. They can begin campaign with candidacy numbers in the campaign rallies.

Election Commissioner Thitichet Nuchnart said the application for the constituency candidate registration on Monday, April 3, 2023 went smoothly.

It will take about seven days for the Election Commission to check their qualifications before announcing eligible candidates. If candidates do not pass the qualification requirement after the EC verification, they can lodge a petition to the Supreme Court.
