Rahul Gandhi reaches Surat to appeal against conviction in defamation case

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Surat on Monday to file an appeal against a trial court’s verdict in a defamation case related to his 2019 remarks using the ‘Modi surname’.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, 52, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached Surat in a scheduled commercial flight. He was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail by a court here last month for a speech in which he linked Prime Minister Modi’s surname with two fugitive industrialists.

He had said that how come this is the nickname of “thieves”. The court granted bail to Rahul Gandhi for 30 days to appeal against the verdict. A day after the verdict, he was disqualified from the membership of the Lok Sabha.
