The Election Commission on Wednesday said it is in no hurry to announce the bypoll to Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha seat as the court gave Rahul Gandhi 30 days to appeal. Is.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar told reporters that the commission has decided to hold the by-elections on the seats that were vacant till February. He said, ‘There is no hurry, we will wait. There is no hurry (from our side) to complete the (judicial) remedy that the court has talked about. We will take steps after this.

According to Kumar, the notification for the vacancy of the Wayanad parliamentary seat came on March 23 and as per the law, the bypoll has to be held within six months. He said that under the law, when the term of the Lok Sabha is less than one year, then by-elections are not held.

The Chief Election Commissioner said that in the case of Wayanad, more than a year is still left. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 defamation case. In view of this, he was disqualified from the membership of the Lok Sabha last Friday.
