Bihar and West Bengal have the lowest ratio of police personnel per lakh population in the country at 75.16 and 97.66 respectively, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The minister said that as per the data on police organizations compiled by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), the ratio of police personnel per lakh persons for the entire country as on January 1, 2022 is 196.23 as per sanctioned strength and 152.80 as per actual strength .

In a written reply to a question, he said the sanctioned police-population ratio in Bihar is 115.08, while the figure for West Bengal is 160.76.

According to the figures given in the minister’s reply, the sanctioned strength of police personnel per lakh population in Uttar Pradesh is 181.75, while the actual strength is 133.86.

Similarly, in Gujarat it is 174.39 (accepted) and 127.82 (actual), in Madhya Pradesh 147.23 (accepted) and 121.76 (actual), in Maharashtra 186.36 (accepted) and 136.45 (actual), in Odisha 147.76 (accepted) and 122.59 (actual). ), 139.81 (accepted) and 120.39 (actual) in Rajasthan and 171.95 (accepted) and 154.25 (actual) in Tamil Nadu.
