For the second year in a row, Uttar Pradesh topped the list in terms of registering and disposing of the maximum number of cases through the e-prosecution portal. According to official information, Uttar Pradesh has become the leading state in terms of conviction rate in cases of crime against women.

Additional Director General of Police (Prosecution) Ashutosh Pandey told ‘PTI-Bhasha’ on Sunday that after the year 2021, Uttar Pradesh remained at the top in registering the maximum number of cases through the e-prosecution portal and in their disposal in 2022 as well.

“The trophies we have received recently for 2022 will also be sent to districts to instil a sense of pride among our prosecutors and police officers for their hard work in ensuring conviction in cases,” the official said. He informed that this portal, managed by the Center under the Digital India Mission, ensures communication between the police department and the Directorate of Prosecution under the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS).

He informed that this portal facilitates exchange of information between courts, police, prisons and forensic science laboratories. It aims to provide timely justice to the victims and their families.

Pandey informed that as per the data available till February, 1,11,86,030 cases have been registered on the portal in Uttar Pradesh. After this, 29,31,335 cases have been registered in Madhya Pradesh, 11,89,288 in Bihar, 5,16,310 in Gujarat and 4,71,265 in Chhattisgarh. He informed that in 2021, the conviction rate in cases related to crime against women in Uttar Pradesh was 59.1 per cent as against the national average of 26.5 per cent. The Additional Director General of Police said that Uttar Pradesh has continuously improved in ensuring punishment in criminal cases.

In rape cases, 671 cases resulted in conviction in 2022 as compared to 177 in 2020. Similarly, in the cases registered under the POCSO Act, where conviction was given in 535 cases in the year 2020, in 2022 this figure has increased to 2,313. He said that the conviction rate in cases of dowry death, kidnapping and sexual assault has increased by 220 per cent, 475 per cent and 2,075 per cent respectively in the last two years.

Pandey said, “We have tried to bring together every party concerned with the prosecution to ensure timely justice. The e-Prosecution portal plays an important role in ensuring this.”

“We have tried to change the attitude of public prosecutors, police and judicial officers so that they work together for speedy disposal of cases,” he said.

Senior advocate Rohit Kant said that there has been a significant improvement in the conviction rate in cases of crimes against women and children in Uttar Pradesh.

“The duration of trial in these cases has also reduced which is a sign of change in the mindset of people involved in prosecution,” he added.
