Police deployment everywhere, Amritpal Singh still absconding, internet shut down in Punjab

Four members belonging to the outfit led by hardline preacher and pro-Khalistan Amritpal Singh were arrested from Punjab and brought to Assam’s Dibrugarh on Sunday, while efforts are on to nab Amritpal and his other associates.

The Punjab government extended the suspension of mobile internet and SMS services in the state till Monday afternoon as security forces conducted flag marches at several places in the state, including Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana.

Two more FIRs have been registered against Amritpal Singh and his two accomplices in connection with recovery of weapons from an abandoned vehicle and breaking a police barricade in Jalandhar.

Four arrested members of Amritpal’s organization were brought to Dibrugarh in a special plane, police said. A police official said, “All four are currently lodged in the Dibrugarh Central Jail.” Earlier, the police had said that they would arrest Amritpal soon.

Officials said the Punjab Police launched a major crackdown on Amritpal Singh and his supporters on Saturday and arrested 78 members of an organization led by him. Amritpal’s convoy was stopped in Jalandhar district, but he escaped by dodging the police. Authorities have tightened security at several places.
