‘Fixed toll tax’ may be removed

The National Highways Authority of India is reportedly planning to discontinue the ‘fixed’ toll tax on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the highway authority is likely to introduce a “pay per road use” system, which means that people will have to pay toll according to the distance covered.

NHAI has installed cameras at all entry and exit points on this expressway for toll collection. With this, toll collection will start according to the distance from the people.

There is no fixed tolling booth in “Pay per road use” tolling system. It is an open road tolling that includes automated cameras that can identify vehicles plying on the highway and facilitate them to collect their toll electronically. Automatic Number Plate Reading Cameras (ANPR) will be installed at all entry/exits of the roads, and toll will be charged on kilometer basis. The ‘road per use’ tolling system is likely to be implemented in the next six months.

Last year Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the use of ANPR cameras for toll collection. He said that soon the system would be started on the Dwarka Expressway.

NHAI senior manager Dhruv Gupta told Hindustan Times, “The toll will be collected digitally from commuters and this will be done through automatic number plate recognition cameras, which detect number plates. These cameras will be installed at all entry/exits of the expressway.

He said that NHAI would consider removing the Kherki Daula toll plaza as the fee would be charged based on the use of the road and not for entering the plaza.

An official said that the highway authority collects around Rs 50-55 lakh on an average per day as toll tax at the Kherki Daula toll plaza. Monthly, the toll collection at the plaza goes up to ₹15 crore. Last week, a delegation of the IMT Manesar Industries Association met Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma and submitted a memorandum demanding the removal of the Kherki Daula toll plaza.
