Assam will soon get an advanced cancer research facility

A cancer research center will soon be set up at Amingaon in Kamrup rural district of Assam, which could be the largest cancer research center in South Asia. Officials gave this information on Saturday.

According to officials, this center will make Assam the flag bearer of the North Eastern states on the global map of cancer research centres.

Experts deliberated on the roadmap and operational design of the project in a workshop organized under the aegis of the Medical Education and Research Department of the state government on Friday.

Internationally acclaimed oncologist Dr D Nori along with faculty members from AIIMS, IIT Guwahati, Guwahati Medical College Hospital and other premier medical institutions participated in the workshop to prepare a roadmap for the execution of the project.

Siddharth Singh, Secretary and Commissioner of the Department of Medical Education and Research, told that several rounds of talks were held for the outline of this project.

He said that this research center would also have a Pediatric Cancer Hospital for the treatment of cancer related to children. In addition, a Pediatric Cardiology wing is also envisaged in the project.

He said, Assam would emerge as a state-of-the-art cancer research center with its existing and proposed cancer treatment centres. Which can attract top global talent.

According to Singh, this center will have the potential for better control and management of cancer not only for Assam but also for neighboring states and countries.
