The Assam government on Thursday presented a deficit budget of Rs 935.23 crore for the financial year 2023-24. Funds have been announced in this budget to promote small scale entrepreneurship and to make new recruitments in various departments.

Presenting the budget in the assembly, Finance Minister Ajantha Neog said the state government would invest Rs 5,000 crore to convert over two lakh unemployed youth into job creators.

In the budget speech, he said, “Adding receipts of Rs 1,80,298.83 crore to the Public Account and Rs 2,000 crore to the Contingency Fund, the overall receipts become Rs 3,21,742.71 crore.” Apart from this, an expenditure of Rs 1,79,326.48 from the Public Account and an expenditure of Rs 2,000 crore from the Contingency Fund, the overall expenditure is estimated at Rs 3,21,081.75 crore.

He said that the estimated transactions during the year would result in an estimated surplus of Rs 660.96 crore. This, combined with an initial deficit of Rs 1,596.19 crore, will lead to a budget deficit of Rs 935.23 crore at the end of 2023-24.

The commission informed that the state’s gross domestic product is estimated to increase to Rs 5.5 lakh crore during the next financial year. It was Rs 3.93 lakh crore during 2021-22. He said that by the time the Himanta Vishwa Sharma-led government completes two years on May 10, 40,000 youth would be recruited in various departments, a step in line with the BJP’s poll promise of providing one lakh government jobs.
