New Delhi. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday announced that the party will appeal in higher courts against the recent conviction of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case. Gujarat’s Surat district court found Gandhi guilty for his alleged ‘Modi surname’ remark from 2019.
In a Hindi tweet, Kharge criticized the BJP government, calling them “cowards” and “dictators”. “The Modi government has become politically bankrupt. It sends ED, police and registers cases against speeches,” he said. Kharge also pledged that the party would appeal against the sentence in higher courts.

Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000. However, Gandhi’s sentence has been suspended and bail has been granted, allowing him to appeal against his sentence within 30 days.
BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi filed a case against Gandhi for his alleged remark that “why all thieves are surnamed Modi”.
