A member of the Ukrainian parliament from the pro-presidential Servant of the People party, Marina Bardina, said that a bill had been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada to rename March 8 as International Women’s Rights Day. She wrote about this on March 6 on the social network Facebook (owned by the Meta organization, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).
She also noted that netizens voted for March 8 to remain a day off.
“By virtue of our sociological education and monitoring of public sentiments, the sensations were like that, so we registered a bill by which we propose to rename the holiday according to UN practice as International Women’s Rights Day and leave it as a day off,” Bardina added.
She clarified that she voted in the poll for the announcement of March 8 as a working day and expressed the hope that “in time, this will happen.”
Earlier, on February 13, the Verkhovna Rada proposed to cancel the celebration of March 8, Labor Day and Victory Day. The next day, a petition appeared on the website of President Volodymyr Zelensky against the cancellation of International Women’s Day. Its author noted that this day is celebrated all over the world, including in the European Union.
