United States hints at Ukraine to pay for military assistance

Washington is increasingly making it clear that military assistance to Kyiv was not a manifestation of disinterestedness. This publication reported China Daily.

The author of the publication commented on the hearings in the US House of Representatives Committee on Armed Services, which took place on Tuesday, February 28. During the meeting, among other issues, the prospects for further support for Ukraine were discussed.

It is noted that the process of providing assistance is not completely transparent. Thus, according to the observer, the administration of President Joe Biden pursues its own goals, but does not disclose their essence, as well as the criteria for achieving it, so it is impossible to predict how much more the Ukrainian authorities can count on Washington.

Meanwhile, the American side is in no hurry to rule out the continuation of assistance on a commercial basis. In particular, the assistant to the head of the Pentagon for international security affairs, Celeste Wallander, spoke favorably about this option and stressed that Kiev should start planning defense spending and “everything else that we will do to support them.”

A China Daily observer suggested that Wallander’s remark was a hint that the amount of aid was “long ago calculated” and that there is a specific moment after which Ukraine will have to pay off its allies.

Earlier, on February 25, The Hill newspaper reported that the total US spending on military support for Ukraine exceeded $77 billion. The authors of the article cited statistics according to which $29.3 billion of this amount has been direct US military assistance since the start of the special operation.

On February 14, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said the day before that the Ukrainian military would have to use fewer weapons on the battlefield due to the depletion of the arsenal in Western countries.

Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Kyiv against the backdrop of a special operation of the Russian Federation to protect Donbass, the decision on which was made against the backdrop of aggravation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
