Beijing considers it necessary to resolve the conflict in Ukraine through diplomacy. This was announced on Wednesday, March 1, by Chinese President Xi Jinping during negotiations with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

“It is important to remain committed to a political settlement, abandon the Cold War mentality, respect the rational concerns of all countries, and create a balanced, effective and sustainable security architecture in Europe,” the final press release Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Also, according to Xi, individual states should abandon their attempts to turn the international economic system into an instrument of pressure and, instead, make efforts to find peaceful solutions.

On February 24, China published a position paper on a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. Chinese Deputy Representative to the UN Dai Bing also indicated that the main priority of the Chinese authorities is a ceasefire and hostilities.

Beijing, in particular, called on Russia and Ukraine to respect the sovereignty of all countries, reduce strategic risks, end unilateral sanctions, and take other political settlement actions.

As Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted on February 28, any attempts to bring the situation to a “peaceful track” are welcome. He added that the PRC plan, as in any other, is important nuances, but today there is no opportunity for a proper discussion.

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the Russian Federation highly appreciates China’s desire to contribute to the settlement of the conflict and shares Beijing’s views.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, said that the proposals of the PRC are not a plan of action, but reflections.

The special operation to protect Donbass, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
