Many scientists have noticed the anomalous acceleration of the Earth’s rotation. It was recorded that on July 29, 2022, the planet rotated around its axis 1.59 milliseconds faster than usual. Oleg Ugolnikov, a senior researcher at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained that in this case, a substitution of concepts could have occurred. In fact, a slight acceleration of the planet does not mean that the Earth will turn faster on July 30, and then every day its speed will continue to increase. He noted. that “one record event was passed off as a trend.”
Ugolnikov explained that the time of rotation of the Earth around its axis is 23 hours 56 minutes. However, the planet is not an absolutely monolithic solid body, so small changes are taking place. He compared this phenomenon with the earth day. The expert stressed that they can be a little longer or a little shorter. At the same time, a short day cannot indicate that the Earth is accelerating. “On the contrary, we are gradually undergoing a very, very slow slowdown in the movement of the Earth due to the tidal influence of the Moon,” the scientist noted.
In conclusion, he added that, despite individual cases of an increase in the speed of the Earth’s rotation, the trend of the direction is to slow down the rotation. But don’t worry about it – the speed decreases by about 2 milliseconds per century, he concluded.
