Nearly 200 humanitarian aid planes arrive in Syria after earthquake

Since February 7, almost 200 planes with humanitarian aid for the victims of the earthquake have arrived in Syria, 73 of them to the Khmeimim air base. This was announced on Monday, February 27, by Rear Admiral Oleg Gurinov, deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties (CPVS) in Syria.

“With the assistance of the Russian group of troops (forces), within the framework of international cooperation, humanitarian aid continues to flow from other countries. In total, since February 7, 198 planes with humanitarian aid have arrived on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic from 19 foreign states. Of these, 73 landed and were unloaded at the Russian airbase,” the statement said.

In particular, six cargo planes arrived in Syria from the United Arab Emirates the day before, three of them arrived at the Khmeimim air base.

Gurinov added that more than 283 tons of humanitarian aid had been issued to the population since February 7. In addition, since February 17, more than 1.4 thousand people affected by the earthquake have received assistance from Russian and Belarusian doctors.

Earlier, on February 21, the Russian Emergencies Ministry announced the delivery of another 55 tons of humanitarian aid to Syria. It was clarified that the cargo included food, essentials, clothing, tents.

Also the day before, two special aircraft Il-76 of the Russian Emergencies Ministry delivered 56 tons of humanitarian aid to the Syrian Republic.

Prior to that, on February 6, devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in the Turkish province of Kahramanmarash in the southeast of the country near the Syrian border. According to the latest data, the death toll in the earthquake in Turkey exceeded 44 thousand people, in Syria more than 5.8 thousand people died.
