Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is set to celebrate its 47th founding anniversary today.

On the eve of the day, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages greeting all members of DMP.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid recalled with respect the martyrs of Bangladesh Police, who sacrificed their lives in the War of Liberation and different other periods to maintain law and order.

He said the members of Bangladesh Police had first put up armed resistance against Pakistani occupation forces on the black night of March 25 in 1971 responding to the call of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“A total of 1262 members of Bangladesh Police sacrificed their lives in the war of liberation,” he said.

The head of the state hoped that the DMP will take more effective and dynamic initiatives to attain the trust and love of the people of the city through juvenile gang control, drug prevention, proper traffic management and women and child friendly police services.

He urged DMP members to make them technologically more advanced to deal with the cybercrimes.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the members of Bangladesh Police at Rajarbagh Police Lines had first put up armed resistance against Pakistani occupation forces on the black night of March 25 in 1971 responding to the call of the greatest Bangalee of all time, Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The premier said that since the formation of the Awami League (AL) government, the AL-led government has taken and implemented multi-faceted steps to make the Bangladesh Police modern and pro-friendly.

“We have gradually increased the manpower of Bangladesh Police. Our government has taken effective measures including allotment of land for construction of police stations, outposts, investigation centers, barracks and residential buildings,” she added.

She further said that a 10-storey police hospital has been constructed at Rajarbagh for providing necessary medical services to police personnel and besides, one hospital will be built in each division in the country.

“Arrangements have already been made to procure two helicopters from Russia to enhance the police mobility,” she continued.

The government has already formed the Police Anti-Terrorism Unit and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit to root out militancy and terrorism, she said.

“We have taken effective steps to resolve the issue of promotion of police officers by creating new posts in Bangladesh Police,” she added.

The National Emergency Service number ‘999’ has already gained immense popularity under the overall management of Bangladesh Police, she said.

She hoped that the members of Bangladesh Police will discharge their duties with efficiency, professionalism and neutrality while upholding human values and will act as a supporting force in building the ‘Golden Bangladesh’ as dreamt by Bangabandhu.

Both the president and the premier wished the overall success of all the programs taken on the occasion of the 47th founding day of DMP.
