Two people were killed in separate incidents involving alleged extortionists and armed robbers in Chittagong earlier this week, triggering concern among local residents and prompting calls for swift law enforcement action.
The first incident occurred on Wednesday night (February 25) in the Alankar area of Chittagong city. The victim, identified as Akash Das, was reportedly stabbed to death following a confrontation with a group alleged to be involved in extortion activities.
Akash Das, son of Babul Das from the Dhopapara area near Alankar More, had been working for a long time at a toy factory located near the Sagarika Bitak Bazar intersection. According to family members and coworkers, a group had been demanding money from workers at the factory for an extended period.
Colleagues claim that Akash had previously protested against these alleged extortion demands, which reportedly led to tension between him and members of the group.
On the night of the incident, Akash had returned to work after dinner when he reportedly found another factory worker, identified as Michael, being assaulted by the group. Witnesses said Akash intervened in an attempt to rescue his coworker. During the altercation, he was allegedly struck on the head with a helmet and then stabbed multiple times.
He was initially taken to Al-Amin Hospital near AK Khan intersection in critical condition. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.
The victim’s family has alleged that the killing was premeditated and linked to prior disputes over the extortion demands. Eyewitnesses named several individuals as allegedly involved in the attack, claiming that the assault was carried out by a group.
Akash’s brother, Sagar Das, said the family is preparing to file a murder case and has demanded a thorough investigation and immediate arrest of those responsible.
Police from Pahartali Police Station visited both the hospital and the scene of the incident to collect information. Authorities stated that they will proceed with a formal investigation once a case is filed.
The death has left Akash’s family devastated. Relatives described him as the only son of his parents. Scenes of grief were visible at both the hospital and the family home.
In a separate incident early Thursday morning (February 26), a 70-year-old man named Chandan Dey was shot and killed during a robbery in Chandanaish Upazila of Chittagong.
The incident took place around 4:45 a.m. in the Badurpara (Hindupara) area of Ward No. 1 under Chandanaish Municipality.
According to local sources, a group of approximately five to ten armed individuals arrived in a microbus during the early hours of the morning. They allegedly targeted cattle sheds in the area.
The group first reportedly removed two cows from a neighboring cowshed. They then attempted to enter Chandan Dey’s cowshed by cutting through the tin wall. When Chandan Dey became aware of the situation and attempted to intervene, the robbers allegedly warned him not to come outside.
Reports indicate that the group managed to take three cows from his shed and load them into a vehicle. When Chandan Dey came outside after hearing the vehicle start to leave, he noticed two individuals still near the cowshed. As he shouted to alert neighbors, the suspects allegedly opened fire.
He was shot in front of his wife and died at the scene. The assailants fled immediately afterward.
Police arrived at the location after receiving information about the incident. The body was recovered and sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Family members are reportedly preparing to file a complaint.
Local residents expressed panic and anger following the incident, demanding the swift arrest of those involved and strict punishment.
Local councilor Md. Shahed confirmed the incident. Chandanaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Elyas Khan also confirmed that a post-mortem examination has been conducted and stated that necessary legal steps will be taken upon receiving a formal complaint from the victim’s family.
