The good news is the Donald J Trump administration in Washington has at long last nabbed Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and the latter is now facing trial in the USA. One hopes the United States’ justice system would take care of the tyrant. In March 2020, a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York had indicted Maduro for narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking, corruption, and other crimes. The US District Court in Manhattan indicted him on January 3, 2026.
One hopes Washington would take the Maduro regime to task for its activities against peace in the world. It had allegedly been facilitating drug trafficking from Colombia and Mexico to the US and serving as a hub for US adversarial groups, including Iran, Hizballah, and Hamas. It had allegedly been collaborating also with the Communist regimes in Cuba and China, and authoritarian Russia.
Most importantly, one hopes, the Trump administration would now see to it that the things improve for the common citizens in Venezuela. One authentic report reveals there had been no trace of development and democracy in Venezuela under the Maduro regime. The regime had been absolutely non-cognizant of the high levels of poverty that persisted in the country. As a result of the regime’s lack of good governance, over 80% of the country today is without electricity. Over 40% of its reproductive age women cannot use contraceptive methods. Venezuela today ranks lowest globally (142nd) in the World’s Rule of Law Index. Things turned so bad during the Maduro regime that more than 7.89 million Venezuelans have fled the country.
Regrettably, a report indicates, all seems to be hunky and dory in Venezuela now. The Maduro regime’s notorious inner circle is intact in Caracas. This circle includes Maduro’s vice-president Delcy Rodríguez, defense minister Vladimir Padrino López, and interior minister Diosdado Cabello. This circle controls major state institutions. It has struck a deal with the Trump administration. Washington intends just to take control of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves.
It is high time Washington took the Venezuelan scenario seriously. It must cease to keep deviating from the diplomatic course it is supposed to undertake as a leader of the free societies in the contemporary world. It must uphold its democratic principles the world over. Only then can it assert its moral authority to do what is supposed to—protect and promote the cause of democracy.
One would suggest Washington to counter the forces of authoritarianism the world over and replace them with the progressive political elements accountable to their citizens. It must bear in mind there is no point seeking reconciliation with the modern-day Goliaths and evolve any consensus with them to govern any nation democratically. History guides us learn a military confrontation alone can resolve differences between the individuals/ nations representing fundamentally divergent views.
History guides Washington and all it democratic-minded allies in the world today to take cognizance of the catastrophic implications of any procrastination in the extermination of the modern-day Goliaths on the future of modern humanity. They all must be prepared to coordinate with each other to take on the devils.
