Why the foundation stone of a Babri Masjid in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections? A plan to trigger unrest by invoking religious sentiments and provoking communal tension—this is the burning question across Bengal’s political circles today. BJP and various Hindutva organizations have now set their sights on TMC MLA from Bharatpur, Murshidabad — Humayun Kabir.
Hindutva groups had earlier raised objections several times about his alleged anti-Hindu remarks. Now, with Humayun announcing that the foundation stone for a Babri Masjid will be laid on December 6 in Beldanga, Murshidabad, tensions have peaked.
The BJP is raising the pitch over the proposed Babri Masjid in Murshidabad. Reacting to TMC MLA Humayun Kabir’s announcement, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi directly targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying:
“The situation in West Bengal is very bad. In Murshidabad, a TMC leader, Humayun Kabir, has said he will rebuild the Babri Masjid. Leaders of the INDIA bloc are either silent on this or indirectly supporting it. So ahead of the elections, what kind of atmosphere do TMC and Congress want to create? In 2005, Mamata Banerjee got angry in Parliament and threw a file at the Speaker because she was not allowed to speak on Bangladeshi infiltration. I want to ask TMC—was Mamataji right then, or is she right now?”
On the other hand, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, said:
“This is the same TMC leader who once said, ‘We are 70%, Hindus are 30%. We will cut and float them down the river.’”
Thus, ahead of the Assembly elections, it has become a political ‘Babri bomb’! Murshidabad is turning turbulent over this foundation-laying ceremony. TMC’s rebel MLA Humayun Kabir has announced that on December 6, the day the Babri structure in Ayodhya was demolished, the foundation stone for a new Babri Masjid will be laid in Beldanga, Murshidabad.
Humayun says— “The Islamic Foundation will build the mosque, college, and hospital with its own funds. No one can stop it.”
But the real question lies elsewhere—why this sensitive date? Why the name Babri at all? Political insiders say: “This is Humayun’s open challenge to snatch away the Muslim vote bank from TMC. And the fire of this challenge is spreading everywhere.”
TMC’s top leadership is publicly silent, but the inner circles are deeply uncomfortable. Because—retaining the Muslim vote is a matter of political survival for them. But if they stand beside the ‘Babri’ name, the Hindu vote will swing away, and the opposition will weaponize it.
A local TMC leader in Murshidabad says: “This is a time-bomb for us. On one side Muslim anger, on the other Hindu anger—both will explode on us.”
In short, Humayun’s move has triggered an explosion inside TMC itself.
Meanwhile, BJP has already hit the ground. They are saying: “An attempt to inflame Hindu sentiments,” “The name of Babur will not be accepted in Bengal,” “Mamata’s appeasement politics is setting the state on fire.”
BJP’s minority leader Kassem Ali also asks: “Who is Babur? A foreign invader and plunderer! Why build a mosque in his name? Muslims of Bengal are not accepting this. This is not just a mosque—it’s a plan to destabilize Bengal. Its end will be like Ayodhya; Bengal may see the same.”
On the other hand, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has strongly protested. VHP’s warning: If a mosque is built in Babur’s name, there will be an agitation.
They say it is an anti-India, seditious conspiracy.
Amiya Sarkar, VHP’s East Zone secretary, said: “TMC MLA Humayun Kabir has publicly said he will build a ‘Babri Masjid’ in Murshidabad. VHP strongly condemns this statement. Babur was a terrorist, a foreign invader, a looter, and a rapist. Any attempt to build a religious structure in his name is unacceptable. Whether in Bengal or anywhere in India, VHP will firmly resist any effort to construct a mosque named after Babur.”
Even within Muslim organizations, divisions have surfaced. One group says:
“Building a mosque is our religious right.”
Another group bluntly says: “Why December 6? This is clearly political. Muslims are being pushed to the front to destabilize the state.”
Meanwhile, Murshidabad is already on the intelligence radar due to the recent Delhi blasts and the ongoing SIR operations. The district, bordering Bangladesh, is considered a hotspot. There are fears that the foundation-laying event may ignite unrest. Sources say Beldanga, Lalgola, Suti, Raninagar, and parts of Bhagabangola are high-risk zones.
Political analysts say— ahead of the Bengal Assembly elections, this is no longer just about a mosque. It is an electoral agenda of Muslim vote vs Hindu vote.
The conflict between TMC–Congress–ISF over the Muslim vote will intensify further.
On the other hand, BJP sees this as a golden opportunity to consolidate the Hindu vote bank.
