The conflict in Gaza has been a wake-up call for Jews globally. It has exposed the virulent antisemitism that we knew was there but had been contained within. And when I say within, I mean within the media, left wing organizations such as the Trade Unions, academia, the Green Party and the comfortable latte sipping middle classes. Hiding behind rabid condemnation of Zionism whilst suggesting this is not antisemitism is only for those with their heads up their posteriors and liars. The two are one despite the theoretical pseudo intellectual logic for denying such claims. I know it and you know it.
The peddling of Jew hating propaganda by all those collectives noted above was knowingly encouraged and facilitated to create the most uncomfortable and frightening conditions for diaspora Jews since the Nazi era. Jews have been totally betrayed, and this betrayal seems unstoppable as the political elite expose their moral indecency simultaneously pandering for the Muslim vote, so important in numerous ‘swing’ constituencies especially in the UK and Europe.
Make no mistake, those at the BBC and on the political far left, now encouraged by the Muslim bloc and the Liberal Democrats have utterly betrayed the Jewish community. The paradox of the collective, I term the ‘Jew hating Jews’ are fully supportive of Israel’s demonization and see no problem in the suggesting that those supporting anti-Zionism is not antisemitism which is truly baffling. I cannot comprehend that these folks feel comfortable promoting this ideological nonsense.
If Trump’s peace plan comes to fruition, one positive should be the number and intensity of the too regular hate marches in all cities across the world. Surely the concept of diminishing returns should kick in at some stage, but I fear not.
Now let’s analyze the degrees to which actors involved in the conflict have fared starting with the antagonists, Hamas and the Gazans.
Irrespective of how they arrived at their current destination , had anyone told the IDF that within a two year period Hamas would no longer be a real military threat , their weaponry virtually destroyed and thousands of their operatives killed , the daily barrage of rockets fired into Israel no longer possible, Israel’s armed forces would have settled for that outcome. And that outcome has been attained. Hamas should not be able to recover from the heights of its military prowess which were as powerful two years ago as any non-nation armed group in existence. High profile leaders have been killed and funding dried up, defeated on the battlefield they may still hold a political brief although the main parties concerned including former Arab supporters have so far agreed that they will have no role in the new Gaza.
Now let’s concern ourselves with the Gazans themselves who largely celebrated the events of October 7th having been indoctrinated via the UNRWA funded Palestinian – Hamas education system to exterminate Jews as per their 1988 Charter.
Despite billions of dollars feeding their Nazi ideology and extravagant lifestyle – forget the past media descriptions of Gaza being an open-air prison given the number of shopping malls, numerous health facilities, luxury car show rooms, restaurants, and sea front villas that previously littered the geography, Gaza is now in ruins. The Gazans unequivocally supported those whose sole objective was to destroy their neighbor, attempted that objective and lost. Gazans are paying the price for that support. Can they recover to a normality? Probably not for another generation or more.
The next group, Iran and her proxies, Hezbollah in Syria and Lebanon and the Houthis controlling part of Yemen. How have they fared? Like Hamas all these bad faith actors have been dealt severe military and political defeats, of that I along with numerous and other well-informed activists and researchers, are certain. Devastating blows have been inflicted on all and whilst they have not been totally defeated, the threat they posed pre-October 7 is no longer such a threat. And again, Israel and the IDF would certainly have settled for that.
Moreover, both Iran and Yemen are experiencing extreme weather conditions that have inflicted havoc on their populations in terms of water and electricity supply, health care, food production, and infrastructure chaos. Both countries through climate change, mismanagement of resources and conflict are in dire straits and only totalitarian oppression of the street and domestic opposition is maintaining their power to govern. Their currencies are worthless and further predicted extremes in weather conditions could well see the end of both regimes. How ironic would it be if manmade disaster and the hand of the Almighty, not conflict, brought about the downfall of both.
Hezbollah’s collapse was a fourfold convergence of events – Iran’s inability to help as before, the destruction of Assad’s Syria, Israel’s war effort, and Lebanon’s bravery in rejecting them. Now Hezbollah are still on the scene, but their power base is becoming increasingly weakened and if Syria are accepted into the mainstream of good faith actors, Hezbollah’s role will be mainly political. Again, Israel and the IDF would have surely settled for that scenario two years back.
We must recognize too that the downfall of Syria destroyed the influence of Russia who had for decades invested billions in propping up Assad politically and militarily and this has significantly strengthened Israel’s position. Indeed, it is most likely that Israel will deal with the new regime in Syria to avoid conflict which again Israel could only have dreamed of two years back.
That analysis would seem to indicate that Israel’s pre-October 7 enemies have lost the battle but now we must analyze who has been positively impacted during the last two years. Well certainly Trump who has gained much credibility and Qatar for their role in mediation. Politically, Turkey by backing the anti-Assad regime and showing total support for the Palestinians has raised its profile in the world of Islam. But by doing both Erdogan has riled domestic opposition and Iran’s wrath. Erdogan sees himself as the new Nasser or Saddam Hussein, the unifying strong Islamic leader and for now his stock is riding very high. Iran economically must pander to Turkey’s leader though in reality would love to see him fail. Turkey may also pose a threat to Israel if the current mutually acceptable relationship between Israel and Syria reverses.
And now to Israel. Can she recover from the trauma of October 7 and global hostility she and Jews outside of Israel are currently experiencing? Is this Jew hatred able to recover from the depths the haters are currently wallowing in. The UN, social media influencers, the world of celebrity, academia and sport and some very hostile nations such as Norway, Ireland, Spain and South Africa show no signs of stopping the momentum of antisemitism which is spiraling on a seemingly irreversible upward trajectory. For sure, Israel has lost the public relations battle and she must address this remarkable failure starting from yesterday. Her inability to eloquently challenge the haters has impacted every Jew who loves and prays for the nation state of Israel and its citizens. The Jew hating Jews must also be challenged as they give support and perverted credibility to the haters which is both perplexing and frustrating.
There are many of us that are fighting this battle but the Israeli government to date has paid us no attention which is mind boggling. We are invited to the embassy to discuss – nodding heads but no plan to go forward. We have friends out there who support us but they too are given short shrift. Israel needs to put this right and I and others can only but continue to try. I fear the unchecked rise of antisemitism globally may create further severe, negative events waiting in store for us.
