The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangladesh hosted a grand reception at Le Méridien Dhaka on May 11, Saturday evening to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, a milestone that continues to carry profound significance for Russia and the broader global community.

The event, held with solemn pride and festive grandeur, was attended by high-ranking Bangladeshi officials, distinguished members of the diplomatic corps, influential business leaders, and media representatives. It served not only as a commemoration of a pivotal moment in world history but also as a reminder of the historical bonds of friendship between Russia and Bangladesh.

In his welcoming address, H.E. Mr. Alexander Mantytskiy Khozin, Ambassador of Russia to Bangladesh, emphasized the critical role played by the Soviet Union in achieving victory over Nazi Germany. Reflecting on the enormous sacrifices made by the Soviet people, he stated, “The USSR bore the brunt of the struggle against fascism, and the triumph of May 9, 1945, came at a tremendous cost. We lost over 27 million lives – a sacrifice that must never be forgotten.”

Ambassador Khozin also cautioned against ongoing attempts in some parts of the world to distort the historical facts surrounding World War II. “Any attempts to distort the historical truth, to whitewash Nazi criminals and their accomplices, to diminish the role of the Soviet people in the victorious end of the war are blasphemous and must be stopped,” he declared firmly, earning nods of agreement from many in the audience.

He further stressed that preserving the memory of those sacrifices is crucial, not only for Russia but for all nations committed to peace, justice, and the fight against extremism in any form.

Joining Ambassador Khozin on stage was Mr. Sattar Mia, Head of the National Group company and President of the Russian Friendship Society with Bangladesh. Mr. Mia, a long-time promoter of cultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations, underscored the strong and enduring partnership between Russia and Bangladesh. He praised the Soviet Union’s historical contributions to Bangladesh’s development, especially in sectors like energy, education, and infrastructure, and expressed hope for further cooperation in the coming decades.

The evening’s cultural program was a vibrant celebration of Russian heritage. Specially flown in for the occasion by the National Group company, the renowned Russian folk ensemble “Obraz” performed a series of traditional ballet and folk dances from various Russian regions. Dressed in colorful, intricate costumes, the performers transported the audience through Russia’s rich cultural tapestry, showcasing both the solemnity and joyous spirit that define its national identity.

The performances were met with enthusiastic applause from the attendees, many of whom marveled at the ensemble’s artistry and energy.

Adding to the evening’s historical depth was the exhibition titled “Way to Victory”, featuring a carefully curated collection of archival photographs depicting key moments from the Great Patriotic War. Guests browsed through images of Soviet soldiers, wartime leaders, civilian heroes, and battlefronts, gaining a powerful visual understanding of the immense struggle and resilience of the Soviet people.

For many Bangladeshi attendees, the exhibition provided a valuable educational opportunity, shedding light on aspects of World War II history that are often underrepresented in Western narratives.

Beyond commemorating a historic event, the reception also served as a platform to strengthen contemporary ties between Russia and Bangladesh. Discussions on the sidelines between diplomats, businesspeople, and academics touched on a range of mutual interests – from trade and investment to education, defense cooperation, and cultural exchange programs.

Several officials expressed their appreciation for Russia’s consistent support in various fields and noted the importance of further enhancing collaboration in emerging sectors such as technology, renewable energy, and higher education.

As a token of appreciation and remembrance, each guest was presented with a set of memorable gifts symbolizing the spirit of Victory Day and the enduring friendship between the Russian and Bangladeshi people.

In a world facing growing divisions and new security threats, the Victory Day reception at Le Méridien Dhaka stood as a poignant reminder of the cost of conflict and the importance of unity against tyranny and extremism. It also reinforced Russia’s commitment to safeguarding the historical truth and honoring those who fought for freedom and peace.

By celebrating this historic 80th anniversary with such dignity and warmth, the Russian Embassy in Dhaka not only honored its past but also charted a hopeful path toward a future of stronger bilateral ties and mutual understanding between Russia and Bangladesh.
