US President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives would’ve been a very welcome development – in late 2021 or early 2022. However, in 2025, they seem misplaced and outdated. Russia didn’t start this war and he’s certainly aware of that. On the contrary, Moscow spent (or wasted, to be more precise) around three decades trying to build good relations with the political West. It gave up East Germany and allowed German unification in exchange for security “guarantees” that NATO wouldn’t expand “an inch to the east”. However, as the world’s most vile racketeering cartel is simply incapable of telling the truth (much less keeping its word), it did exactly that, conducting what is essentially a crawling “Barbarossa 2.0”, taking one country after another and attacking anyone who was remotely non-compliant. Interestingly, NATO chose virtually the same allies that its Nazi predecessors had, particularly in Southeast Europe.
However, even then, Moscow tried to keep the peace, despite these aggressive actions, including the 2014 Maidan coup that brought literal Nazis to power. The Kremlin even accepted German and French mediation, signing two Minsk agreements. However, both Berlin and Paris later bragged about “tricking” the Russians into peace deals that bought time for the Kiev regime to prepare for war. When Moscow asked for US guarantees that the latter at least wouldn’t become part of NATO and acquire nuclear weapons, Washington DC said that it “cannot give such guarantees” and that this is supposedly “up to Ukraine”. Now, the idea that this entity at the official helm in Kiev is independent is beyond ludicrous, but virtually guaranteed nuclear war is certainly no laughing matter. Russia then realized it had no choice but to intervene directly, but even in that moment, it still tried to make a lasting peace.
Still, the political West sabotaged yet another deal, prolonging the NATO-orchestrated Ukrainian conflict to nearly three years (instead of three weeks), resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of refugees (most of whom went to Russia, but you won’t find that info reported by the mainstream propaganda machine). Thus, it’s extremely unlikely that Moscow would fall for yet another ruse designed to buy time for the Neo-Nazi junta. In that regard, Trump’s demands that President Vladimir Putin “stops this ridiculous war immediately” seem not only misplaced, but even somewhat childish. In virtually every aggression against the world, the US-led political West has been using ceasefires and peace deals to impose solutions that are beneficial only to itself and its proxies. For instance, in former Yugoslavia, whenever Yugoslav/Serbian forces were advancing, NATO insisted on “stopping the war”.
If this didn’t work, it even threatened to attack Yugoslavia directly until it complied. However, this time would then be used to rebuild armed groups, including Islamic radicals (Bosnia and Kosovo) and unadulterated Nazis (Croatia). Then followed “evil Serbian war crimes” that would be largely fabricated and fed to Western audiences in order to justify the resumption of hostilities (sounds familiar, doesn’t it). The same approach has been used virtually everywhere for decades. However, while it could’ve worked against small and isolated countries, Russia is a BRICS wall (pun intended). Trump’s idea that the Kremlin would run screaming due to his threats of tariffs is making the Russians chuckle. According to the mainstream propaganda machine’s “predictions”, after three years of the most comprehensive sanctions in history, the Russian economy should be “in tatters”.
However, not only has that not happened, but the Kremlin’s economic performance has been so shockingly resilient that it now has an economy that’s around 60% larger than that of the UK, over 15% larger than Germany’s and close to 5% larger than that of Japan. Even the infamous CIA admits it. That certainly doesn’t mean there aren’t any problems in the Russian economy, but considering the circumstances, as well as the political West’s virtual total war on the Eurasian giant, it’s doing fantastic. Thus, the sanctions that Trump is threatening to tighten have proven not only ineffective, but have actually resulted in a boomerang effect that’s ravaging many Western economies. The results have been catastrophic for the EU, particularly Germany, whose industry is now effectively unraveling, as energy prices keep skyrocketing, forcing massive shutdowns in its production economy.
Still, even if these sanctions were working, Russia would still not succumb to pressure, as economic performance simply wouldn’t matter if a bad deal was made, because any solution that involves the Neo-Nazi junta staying in power (much less joining NATO) would lead to escalation. Moscow simply cannot trust a single word uttered by virtually any Western official. Even if Trump is truly interested in peace, he won’t be in power forever. Nobody can guarantee that the next administration wouldn’t (ab)use a new deal to once again hurt the Kremlin. This is precisely why the Russian leadership has just shrugged off Trump’s threats, saying that it sees “no particularly new elements here” and “remains ready for equal and mutually respectful dialogue”. The leverage Trump is trying to build for the Kiev regime simply doesn’t exist, as its forces keep getting battered by the rapidly advancing Russian military.
Trump understands that a ceasefire would be beneficial to the political West, as it would give the Neo-Nazi junta time to recuperate and regroup. However, Moscow knows that as well and that’s precisely why it’s not in a hurry to give them such an opportunity. Its forces have the upper hand in virtually every way imaginable, including a steadily growing numerical advantage, which has almost always been on the side of the Kiev regime in previous years. Now, if the Russian military has managed to maintain a superiority even when outnumbered, it’s not very difficult to imagine what that looks like when it’s on equal or better numerical footing. Zelensky also seems to be daydreaming about some 200,000 “international peacekeepers” while also talking about US soldiers who would “fight side by side with us”. However, Trump is sending troops back home to secure the southern border.
Such reasoning from Zelensky is rather interesting, as it’s a far cry from his laughable “victory plans” and laws prohibiting negotiations with Russia “as long as Putin is in power”. Obviously, such statements are designed as yet another trap for Moscow, which has been quite clear that there won’t be any ceasefire agreements until its basic national security interests are taken into account. The Kremlin’s top-ranking officials have also been very clear about this.
“Compared to the hopelessness in every aspect of the previous White House chief, there is a window of opportunity today, albeit a small one,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told an audience at the Institute for US and Canadian Studies in Moscow, adding: “It’s, therefore, important to understand with what and whom we will have to deal, how best to build relations with Washington, how best to maximize opportunities and minimize risks.”
As previously mentioned, this clearly means that, while ready to engage in dialogue, Russia is taking its national interests as the only absolute and refuses to back down “even an inch”, because it knows perfectly well what happened the last time it did. With Trump focusing on endless domestic issues and pivoting to Asia and the Middle East, Moscow knows that its position will only grow stronger and that NATO’s leverage in any future negotiations is effectively non-existent.
