Biden's MSNBC exit interview

President Joe Biden sat down with MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell for a highly choreographed Oval Office exit interview, during which he repeatedly misrepresented his administration’s achievements and downplayed the failures that defined his presidency. The interview, characterized by softball questions and fawning praise, highlighted Biden’s willingness to evade accountability for the challenges his administration faced and exacerbated.

From his take on the role of oligarchs in American society to blaming Republican-led states for economic woes, Biden’s remarks painted a misleading picture of his presidency. The lack of critical pushback from O’Donnell only added to the interview’s propagandistic tone, shielding Biden from scrutiny while allowing him to promote false narratives.

During the interview, O’Donnell referenced Biden’s farewell address, in which the president warned about an “oligarchy” threatening democracy.

“You issued the warning about the power of the tech-industrial complex, an echo of President Eisenhower’s farewell address,” O’Donnell said, drawing a comparison to Eisenhower’s concerns about the military-industrial complex. “How does this oligarchy affect people out there who’ve never used the word ‘oligarchy’?”

Biden responded, suggesting that if billionaires control key sectors such as the media and the economy, the average American would be left powerless. Ironically, his comments ignored the reality that many of his political allies and donors are among the very “oligarchs” wielding significant influence over American institutions.

For example, Democratic mega-donors like George Soros, Mark Zuckerberg, and Michael Bloomberg have funneled billions into reshaping America’s political and social fabric. Soros, in particular, has funded controversial initiatives, including campaigns to elect district attorneys who push soft-on-crime policies, as well as efforts to dismantle traditional law enforcement structures. Zuckerberg’s infamous “Zuck Bucks” program during the 2020 election funneled hundreds of millions of dollars into election offices in Democratic strongholds, raising concerns about fairness and transparency.

While Biden framed his concerns around the dangers posed by tech billionaires like Elon Musk-who has made Twitter a platform for open dialogue-he conveniently omitted the role of left-leaning oligarchs who suppress dissenting viewpoints and manipulate public discourse.

Biden’s comments also ignored his own party’s history of prioritizing the interests of wealthy donors over grassroots movements. In 2024, Democratic leaders effectively sidelined Biden’s reelection bid, instead anointing Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee-a move that mirrored the Democratic National Committee’s actions in the 2016 primary, when they undermined Senator Bernie Sanders in favor of Hillary Clinton.

This undemocratic pattern highlights the extent to which Democratic elites prioritize their own power over the will of voters. The concentration of influence within the party has led to widespread disenchantment among rank-and-file Democrats, who increasingly view their leadership as disconnected from their concerns.

Another glaring misrepresentation came when Biden claimed journalists were facing repercussions for “telling the truth.” “Journalists I know are worried about whether they’ll be held accountable for telling the truth,” he said, portraying a press corps under siege.

The reality, however, paints a starkly different picture. Many journalists who faced legal or public backlash in recent years were caught spreading misinformation or engaging in overt political activism. For instance, CNN was recently found liable for defaming Navy veteran Zachary Young, further tarnishing its reputation as a credible news source. Similarly, The Atlantic’s Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg faced criticism for advancing a debunked narrative about former President Donald Trump’s alleged comments about veterans.

Perhaps the most egregious example of media dishonesty was the promotion of the now-debunked Russia collusion hoax, which dominated headlines for years and fueled divisive political rhetoric. Despite being proven false, many of the journalists who amplified this narrative have faced little to no accountability.

One of Biden’s most audacious claims during the interview was that Republican-led states bore responsibility for America’s economic struggles. “We’ve invested more in red states than blue states,” Biden said. “Red states really screwed up in terms of the way they handled their economy, manufacturing, and access to supply chains.”

This assertion directly contradicts economic data showing that Republican-led states have outperformed their Democratic counterparts in job recovery and economic growth since the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a WalletHub analysis, 16 of the 20 states leading in job recovery had Republican governors, while eight of the 10 states with the worst job recovery were governed by Democrats.

Biden’s attempt to shift blame onto red states also ignores his administration’s role in exacerbating economic challenges. His massive coronavirus spending package contributed to record inflation, which reached a 40-year high under his watch. Instead of addressing the impact of his policies, Biden deflected responsibility by targeting Republican-led states that have demonstrated more robust economic resilience.

While discussing the economy, Biden defended his record on inflation, downplaying the impact of his administration’s spending spree. He insisted that external factors, such as the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, were primarily to blame for rising prices. However, economists, including those who warned against Biden’s coronavirus spending, have pointed to excessive government expenditures as a significant driver of inflation.

Under Biden’s presidency, the cost of living soared, with grocery prices becoming a major burden for working families. His policies, including the Inflation Reduction Act, failed to deliver meaningful relief, further eroding public confidence in his economic stewardship.

The interview’s lack of journalistic rigor underscores the media’s role in enabling Biden to evade accountability. O’Donnell’s failure to challenge the president on his misleading statements perpetuated a narrative that glosses over Biden’s shortcomings and missteps.

For example, Biden’s claim that red states “really screwed up” economically went unchallenged, despite clear evidence to the contrary. Similarly, O’Donnell’s decision to highlight Biden’s concerns about oligarchs without addressing the role of Democratic mega-donors revealed a partisan bias that undermines journalistic integrity.

President Biden’s Oval Office exit interview with MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell served as a stark reminder of the disconnect between the administration’s narrative and the lived experiences of everyday Americans. From his misleading comments about oligarchs to his unfounded blame on red states for economic challenges, Biden’s remarks reflected a refusal to take responsibility for the failures that defined his presidency.

The media’s complicity in amplifying Biden’s narrative without scrutiny further highlights the need for a robust and independent press that holds leaders accountable. As Biden exits the Oval Office, his legacy will be shaped not only by his administration’s policies but also by the willingness of journalists to challenge the narratives he sought to impose on the American people.
