How the attacks on Trump

Donald J. Trump’s political journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. From his unexpected victory in 2016 to his polarizing term as president, Trump has consistently been a lightning rod for controversy and criticism. But the coordinated efforts to discredit, diminish, and ultimately “disappear” him from the political landscape go beyond one man. The tactics employed against Trump – many unprecedented in their scope and severity – offer a glimpse into a broader strategy of control that threatens not just political figures but all Americans.

Trump’s survival in the face of relentless opposition is notable. Having endured impeachment trials, a deluge of legal battles, and vitriolic public condemnation, he defied the odds to return as the 47th president. However, the real story lies not in Trump’s resilience but in the playbook his opponents used to try to destroy him – a playbook that is not confined to him alone.

From the moment Trump descended the escalator at Trump Tower to announce his candidacy in 2015, he became a target of unprecedented political and institutional opposition. The Steele Dossier, a now-discredited document, painted him as a Russian puppet. The FBI’s misuse of this document, highlighted in Special Counsel John Durham’s report, revealed a shocking “lack of analytic rigor.” Despite the dubious origins of the dossier, it fueled a years-long narrative of Russian collusion, which culminated in the Mueller investigation. Even though Mueller’s findings failed to substantiate the collusion claims, the damage to Trump’s reputation had already been done.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the media vilified Trump for his handling of the crisis. When he criticized China for its role in the virus’s spread, he was labeled xenophobic, despite mounting evidence supporting the plausibility of a Wuhan lab leak. His attempts to strike a balance between public safety and economic stability were framed as callous disregard for human life. Meanwhile, media outlets and Democratic leaders promoted policies that caused long-term harm, including the isolation of elderly populations and extended school closures.

The Hunter Biden laptop saga exemplifies how the establishment manipulated information to undermine Trump. In the weeks leading up to the 2020 election, major media outlets and social media platforms suppressed the story, dismissing it as Russian disinformation. Post-election, many of these platforms and media figures quietly admitted the story’s authenticity. By then, the damage was done, and public perception had already been shaped.

Trump’s post-presidency has been marked by relentless legal battles. From accusations of election interference in Georgia to federal cases concerning classified documents and alleged hush money payments, the legal system has been wielded as a political weapon against him. While accountability is essential, the selective enforcement of laws against Trump compared to other political figures raises questions about the impartiality of the justice system.

The phenomenon extends beyond Trump. Conservative Supreme Court justices, such as Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, faced smear campaigns during their confirmation processes. Kavanaugh, in particular, endured baseless accusations of sexual misconduct, with little regard for due process. Similarly, public figures like Senators Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton, and JD Vance have been vilified for their conservative stances, often facing coordinated media attacks aimed at discrediting them.

Even private citizens are not immune. Pro-life activists, evangelical Christians, and conservative journalists have been targeted, with attempts to silence dissent through public shaming, de-platforming, and legal intimidation. These actions reflect a growing trend: the use of state and institutional power to suppress opposition and consolidate control.

What happened to Trump is not an isolated phenomenon. It is part of a broader strategy to marginalize and silence anyone perceived as a threat to the leftist establishment. The tools used against Trump – media manipulation, legal persecution, and public vilification – are readily available to be deployed against ordinary citizens.

This trend should alarm Americans across the political spectrum. While Trump’s polarizing personality makes him an easy target, the precedent set by these attacks poses a danger to the foundational principles of the republic. The erosion of free speech, the weaponization of the justice system, and the suppression of dissent are antithetical to the values of a democratic society.

The left’s approach to Trump reveals a willingness to employ “total war” tactics – a no-holds-barred strategy aimed at achieving political dominance. TIME Magazine’s article “The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign that Saved the 2020 Election” openly described a coordinated effort among powerful institutions to influence the election. The piece outlined how media, Big Tech, labor unions, and business leaders collaborated to “protect” the election, raising concerns about the ethical implications of such actions.

This level of coordination reflects a consolidation of power among elite institutions. Academia, entertainment, corporate media, and Big Tech have increasingly aligned with progressive ideologies, shaping public discourse and suppressing dissenting views. This consolidation poses a direct threat to the pluralism that is essential for a healthy democracy.

The attacks on Trump are a warning, not just to conservatives but to all Americans. The mechanisms of control used against him can be turned on anyone who challenges the prevailing narrative. As Lee Smith argues in Disappearing the President, these actions represent an elite campaign to “demoralize and desecrate a republic.”

This campaign is not just about Trump; it is about power. The leftist establishment’s ultimate goal is to secure and maintain control by eliminating threats to its agenda. Whether those threats come from political figures, private citizens, or entire communities, the playbook remains the same.

The path forward requires vigilance and resolve. Conservatives and independents must recognize that the fight is not just about Trump or any single individual. It is about defending the principles of liberty, free speech, and the rule of law. Citizens must hold institutions accountable, demand transparency, and resist attempts to consolidate power in the hands of a few.

Moreover, Americans must reject the polarization that enables these tactics to thrive. While Trump’s presidency has been divisive, the broader issue is not about left versus right but about the preservation of democratic values. The same tools used against Trump today could be used against progressive voices tomorrow, should the balance of power shift.

Donald Trump’s political career has been a case study in resilience. Despite the coordinated efforts to destroy him, he remains a force in American politics. However, the real lesson of his experience is not about Trump himself but about the lengths to which powerful institutions will go to protect their interests.

The playbook used against Trump is now a template for targeting dissent. Every American, regardless of political affiliation, should be alarmed by this trend. For if the establishment can marshal its resources to destroy a former president, it can do the same to anyone. The defense of liberty requires recognizing this threat and standing united against the erosion of democratic principles.
