However, with nearly 9 million internally displaced persons, half of whom are children, and almost 2 million refugees scattered across borders, Sudan is currently facing the largest displacement crisis worldwide.
The current crisis in Sudan is deeply rooted in a prolonged conflict that has inflicted untold suffering on its people. As April 15 approaches, marking the second anniversary of Sudan’s devastating war, it serves as a stark reminder of the urgency of the situation. This conflict was ignited by a joint military coup in October 2021, which led to a bitter power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The ensuing violence and instability have had catastrophic consequences for the people of Sudan, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. Immediate and decisive action is imperative to address this ongoing tragedy.
In Darfur, where genocidal atrocities shocked the world in 2003, violence against civilians based on ethnicity has once again reared its ugly head. Meanwhile, aid is deliberately withheld, and humanitarian workers are denied access, exacerbating an already dire situation. The consequences of this manmade disaster are staggering, with hundreds of thousands of Sudanese forced to flee to neighboring countries, compounding existing humanitarian crises in Chad and South Sudan.
External actors have played a detrimental role in exacerbating the conflict by supplying cash and weaponry to the opposing factions. Iran has supplied arms, including drones, to bolster the Sudanese Armed Forces, while the UAE’s influence over the Rapid Support Forces has intensified the violence. Additionally, Russia’s engagement, driven by its strategic interests in Sudan’s abundant resources, complicates the situation further. These external interventions not only fuel the bloodshed but also contribute to the complexity of an already volatile and unstable environment.
The repercussions of Sudan’s turmoil extend far beyond its borders, posing a threat to regional stability and global security. With the Red Sea serving as Europe’s vital maritime connection to Asia and the Pacific, the potential for Sudan to become a hub for illicit activities, including human trafficking and the spread of radicalism, cannot be ignored. Europe’s security interests are undeniably at stake, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action.
Amidst this chaos, it is essential to remember the aspirations of the Sudanese people who bravely took to the streets in a victorious popular uprising against a brutal dictatorship. Their desire for a democratic and peaceful Sudan must not be overshadowed by the actions of the belligerent parties. The European Union and its member states have remained steadfast in their support for civilians and their vision for a better future.
As Sudan stands at a crossroads, the international community must come together to chart a path towards peace and stability. The high-level conference hosted by the EU, France, and Germany in Paris on April 15 presents a crucial opportunity to mobilize support for Sudan and call for an end to the conflict. It must serve as a wake-up call for Africa, Europe, and the entire international community to prioritize the plight of the Sudanese people and take decisive action to alleviate their suffering.
A fundamental aspect of addressing this crisis is a steadfast commitment to uphold international law and ensure accountability for those committing atrocities and war crimes. Leaders of the conflicting parties, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, must respond to calls for an immediate ceasefire. It is imperative that they engage in sincere and constructive negotiations to bring an end to the ongoing violence and suffering in Sudan.
