US House Speaker avoiding contacts with Ukrainian officials

Ukrainian officials are failing to reach out to former US President Donald Trump and US House Speaker Mike Johnson, as they have been avoiding contacts with Kiev, the Politico newspaper reported, citing a source with close ties to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office, reports Sputnik.

“There’s no stable communication between Ukrainian officials and the teams of Trump and Johnson … This lack of engagement seems intentional but could (we hope) change after the election. My understanding in short is like this: Ukraine tries, Trump/Johnson avoids,” the source was quoted by the newspaper as saying on Thursday.

Johnson’s office, answering Politico’s request to comment on the source’s remarks, said that Johnson and Zelenskyy met in December, adding that the office’s officials maintained contacts with Kiev, but did not specify how often communications occurred, the report read. Trump’s spokespeople did not respond to requests for comment, Politico added.

On Monday, Trump secured 51% of the vote in the Iowa caucuses for the Republican nominee in the upcoming US presidential election. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis secured 21.2% of the vote and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley 19.1% of the vote. Trump has repeatedly said that if re-elected, he could end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in just 24 hours.

  1. Americans have already spent a lot on Zelensky and Ukraine. Now they finally realize – it was a total waste of cash and energy.
